Marine Engineering- A Rewarding Career
Marine Engineering has been an area of interest from times immemorial. It is said
that Marine Biology originated from the times Aristotle existed. He even contributed
to this field. The tremendous growth achieved by the industry has made room for lot
of research and development in the field. Gradually, it became an important field of
academic study. Many people wish to pursue marine engineering courses. Marine
engineering was further strengthened by increased commercial activities across the
seas. The number of merchant navy vessels and trading has expanded exponentially.
All this has created a number of employment opportunities in merchant navy or
marine engineering.
Marine Engineering is an important part of engineering services. Whilst it is essential
to have certain pre-requisites for getting a job on merchant navy, certain profiles
need distinct qualifications.

Entry Qualification:
A number of universities offer post graduate and degree courses in the field of
marine engineering. If your goal is to deliver engineering services by becoming a
marine engineer, then you will need a Senior Secondary Certificate first. This is the
basic qualification required for entry into this course.
Length of Study:
The duration of the engineering graduation course varies across the world. However,
the basic is four years in which a student undergoes comprehensive training in both
theoretical and practical aspects of science. Practical sessions are also conducted
both in-housed and on real sites.
Content of Course:
Theoretical subjects might include computer science, applied mathematics, physics,
electronics, English, and marine management. Apart from these, students are also
enlightened on various subjects including maritime commerce, environmental
science, and control systems. If you aspire to become a marine engineer, then these
are the subjects you will have to gain a hold over as they can help you sharpen your
mental faculties. When it comes to practicals, Magnetic and Gyro compasses,
electronic navigational aids like the Radar, Decca etc, Chart work, practical navigation
and astronomy are covered.

Career in Marine Engineering:
Engineering services are availed of by a number of employers. However, if you wish
to increase your chances of a good job, you can go ahead with a Masters degree in
marine engineering. For a candidate, who has already graduated in marine
engineering, the training will not be tough. The Masters course usually consists of lab
hours that help implement the theoretical principles studied previously. Having a
well-created portfolio can help you reach the peak in the field of merchant navy and
also help you excel in the field of engineering services.
Recent studies predict a stable increase in international trade. With this prediction, it
is only proved that the industry will grow tremendously. It is a fact that shipping is
the easiest and cheapest mode of transport across the world. This makes the youth
pursue marine engineering and create a successful career. With interest and skills,
you can carve your own niche in the field.
