WHAT IS CONSTRUCTED WETLAND ??
Constructed wetlands (CWs) are wetlands intentionally created from
non-wetland sites for the sole purpose of wastewater or storm water
treatment.
MECHANISM OF CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS
SKEMATIC VIEW OF CW
Settleable and suspended solids are effectively removed in the wetland by filtration and sedimentation.Attached and suspended microbial growth is responsible for the removal of soluble organic compounds.Phosphorus are removed in constructed wetlands by adsorption, and precipitation, plant uptake.Pathogens are removed in wetland during the passage of wastewater through the system mainly by sedimentation
TYPES OF CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS
A. HORIZONTAL FLOW CW
B. VERTICAL FLOW CW
C. HYBRID FLOW CW
HORIZONTAL FLOW CW
HF wetland can effectively remove the organic pollutants (TSS, BOD5 ,COD) from the wastewater.
VERTICAL FLOW CW
Advantages Of Vertical Flow CW
•They have much greater oxygen transfer capacity resulting in good nitrification;•They are considerably smaller than HF system.•They can efficiently remove BOD5, COD and pathogens.
Hybrid constructed wetland
Hybrid constructed wetland is the combination of HF- CW and VF -CW. In these systems, the advantages and disadvantages of the HF and VF can be combined to complement each other.

Combinations of hybrid CW

2.HF–VF systems
CONCLUSION
Removals obtained by the hybrids are very high for BOD, COD, NH4, Suspended solid, turbidity and faecal coliforms.
Hybrid CWs could cover the limitation of each single CW.
Combining constructed wetlands can solve specific water pollution problems such as heavy metals and organic compounds.
