H&V News Awards 2015 3handvawards.com

A record-breaking year

We’ve seen another uplift for the H&V News Awards this year, which the team believes is down to a number of factors. Entry and attendance numbers have both

increased year on year. For the fi rst time in many years – possibly for the fi rst time in the Awards’ history – the number of entries passed the 200 mark. The fact that this occurred when the schedule had been changed, resulting in the entry deadline moving forward by more than a month, makes the total even more remarkable.

At the time of writing, the attendance fi gure had also risen by more than 100 compared with the 2014 Awards presentation evening and looked to be exceeding 1,100 individuals. Not only does this show that the event continues to be regarded as the industry’s favourite night out of the year, but that there is scope for further future developments.

The industry’s Oscars is now 21 years old and the recent growth in entry and attendance numbers shows, without doubt, that it is fi rmly established as the major event in everyone’s calendar.

Another notable factor in its ongoing success is the judging process, which was changed three years ago. We now have a judging panel of nearly 60 independent individuals, with each category having its own dedicated team of judges.

They judge entries online initially, to identify the fi nalists that will present to them in person during the interview week in March. The Awards’ judging process is the most involved for any event in the building services sector, which makes the winning of an industry Oscar trophy the most prized accolade.

The Awards evening itself is also highly valuable in a number of ways. While some companies fi nd it the best way to reward employees for all their efforts, others use it to entertain customers. Further value is obtained from the many networking opportunities. Among the various compliments received for the 2014 event was recognition of the high number of senior management personnel in attendance, displaying further endorsement of the value placed by the industry on the H&V News Awards.

We hope you enjoy your evening and look forward to welcoming you back in 2016.

Winner Debbie Abrahams MP

Sponsored by

The B&ES Gold Award

The prevalence of late payment has long been a concern for all organisations engaged in construction and building

engineering services, as it results in negative cash flow, under-investment in skills and training, lack of innovation, the “bullying” of small firms by larger customers and those further up the supply chain and – in the most extreme cases – business failure and consequent workforce unemployment.

Following her election to parliament in January 2011, Debbie Abrahams launched the Be Fair – Pay on Time campaign to raise awareness of the ill effects of late payment and convened a Westminster Hall debate designed to gain political consensus on how to address the issue.

She went on to instigate an all-party enquiry into late payment – in particular, its negative effects on small and medium-sized enterprises – and has taken time from her busy parliamentary schedule to talk directly to practitioners about their own experiences at the “sharp end”.

The resulting report included a number of recommendations that reflect the long-held beliefs and aspirations of the Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES), its members and the sector it represents. In particular, the report called on the government to:n promote the adoption of good-practice

guidance for supply chain management;n encourage businesses publicly to confirm their

compliance with ethical business practice;n support the development by trade associations

of “fair treatment charters” for their members;n establish a Construction Code of Conduct

overseen by an independent adjudicator;n introduce a Retentions Monies Bill, whereby

cash retained by a customer for a supplier must be held in trust;

n require all pubic-sector contracts to include a pre-qualification questionnaire on a company’s past payment performance; and

n make fair payment a contractual requirement for all new government contracts. It went on to point out that construction

companies were under pressure to agree to unprofitable contracts and “ended up taking short cuts”, resulting in “poor quality, potentially dangerous buildings” as a consequence of “cut-price construction”.

Ms Abrahams – who acted as chair and convenor of the All-Party Enquiry into Late Payments in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises

and was the author of the final report – became Labour MP for the Oldham East and Saddleworth constituency in September 2011, following a distinguished career in public health.

She was subsequently appointed parliamentary private secretary to shadow health secretary Andy Burnham and elected as chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party’s Health Committee.

Ms Abrahams is seeking re-election to the House of Commons at the general election on Thursday, 7 May.

Balfour BeattyBalfour Beatty has completed its £14.5m mechanical and electrical services contract for the 7,825 sq m National Graphene Institute at The University of Manchester.

The use of BIM was an integral factor in the production of off-site modular units which, by reducing the amount of time required on the National Graphene Institute site, generated savings of around 15% on construction costs when compared with traditional mechanical and electrical installation.

BIM provided the opportunity for end users to visualise the finished building and services.

S&P Coil ProductsS&P Coil Products began making active BIM objects available in January 2014, and was the first manufacturer to develop BIM objects linked to type catalogues generated from tried and tested user-friendly selection software.

This allows it to drive information into the objects and models, particularly when multiple objects are required. This success and positive feedback prompted S&P Coil Products to make all its BIM objects linked to selection programmes and invent its “active BIM” approach.

Beverley Clifton MorrisEarlier this year, Beverley Clifton Morris obtained Innovate UK funding to undertake a research project in conjunction with Liverpool John Moores University.

This knowledge-transfer partnership is a two-and-a-half year project to develop innovative services delivery to enable clients to benefit from lower capital and whole lifecycle costs. Via the partnership, the company will build its mechanical and electrical BIM capabilities to develop cost plans from the earliest stage of building the 3D models.

BIM Initiative of the Year

With government targets on efficiency savings in the delivery of projects and full BIM collaboration by 2016

looming, Shepherd Engineering Services’ unique BIM2MOSAIC system represents a trailblazing vision in the development of BIM functionality, training and project delivery.

It automates the material take-off, material costing and labour costing process for building services commodity items using the 3D BIM generated by the Shepherd Engineering Services’ BIM team. It incorporates the BIM currently used by the Shepherd PRISM team to maximise early project visualisation and cost efficiency for its clients, with a planning system that calculates cost of materials and labour. Shepherd Engineering Services has also worked closely with some of its specialist supply chain to provide a true digital manufacturing functionality from BIM.

Through collaboration, training and development with a ductwork subcontractor and PRISM, Shepherd Engineering Services has enabled a seamless workflow, delivering improved business process efficiency, reduced waste and carbon, lowered cost and saved time.

By adopting BIM in such a comprehensive manner, the firm has cost-effectively increased turnover while also addressing industry-wide issues such as labour costs§”Judges’ comment

Building Services Project of the Year

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) completed the £14.5m mechanical and electrical (M&E) services contract for the

7,800 sq m National Graphene Institute (NGI), which was constructed to carry out further research into graphene – a unique material that has many exceptional properties, including being 200 times stronger than steel.

BBES supplied the mechanical, electrical and process services for the NGI, which was built by BAM Construction. M&E services installed included ventilation, heating, cooling, domestic water, power, lighting, data, fire detection, security and BMS. The building’s laboratory function meant that several areas required close control of temperature, humidity, pressure, vibration and electromagnetic interference, which added complexity to the design of the M&E package. Process services for the laboratories and clean rooms were also installed, such as ultra-pure water, specialist gases, vacuum, compressed air, and solvent and acid extract systems. Computer-aided design, off-site manufacture and BIM have revolutionised the way BBES works, minimising waste and delivering customer value.

An impressive project with many complexities, including the tight footprint of the build and the many M&E process services installed”Judges’ comment

Winner Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, National Graphene Institute at The University of Manchester

Sponsored by

Winner Nest Labs

Domestic H&V Product of the Year – Heating and Controls

Nest reinvented the humble thermostat, making it sleeker, smarter and more efficient. The Nest Thermostat not only

lets customers remotely monitor and control their heating system, it actively learns homeowners’ schedules and the temperatures they prefer to create an optimum heating schedule for their home and minimise costly heating swings.

After teaching it for a week by turning it up upon waking and turning it down when leaving the house, the Nest Thermostat will create a personalised and optimised schedule for a household.

It also continues to learn over time – not just about a family’s heating habits, but even how long it takes to heat their home and how external weather conditions effect a home’s heating profile.

Even when the routine is broken, this thinking thermostat can sense when a house is empty and adjust the room temperature to avoid heating or cooling an empty home.

The temperature can also be changed from anywhere using a smartphone, tablet or laptop, as long as the device is connected to the internet.

The product ticked every box for this entry – truly innovative, friendly toward the environment and affordable for most homeowners”Judges’ comment

EndoTherm is an energy-saving central heating additive that has been independently proven to save homeowners

up to 15% on their heating bills. The product can be added to any wet-based central heating system, where it mixes with the water and changes the physical properties of the fluid – properties that change include specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity and surface tension.

This change in physical properties means the water will heat up quicker, or with less energy, and stay warmer for longer, ultimately meaning the boiler will have to do less work to maintain the desired temperature within a property.

It has also been proven to have slight inhibitor properties and to act as a silencer, reducing the noise of heating systems. EndoTherm is easy to install, with an installation kit and video available for installers, and once it is in a system it does not require constant maintenance or optimisation.

It will continue to make savings for as long as it is in the heating system. EndoTherm reduces use by up to 15% (under test conditions at Enertek International) with real-life examples in excess of this figure.

The Comfoair + Comfocool product is an integrated comfort ventilation and cooling solution for residential housing. Together, they offer whole-house efficient heat recovery ventilation, which provides filtered and tempered fresh air into homes during colder months.

Matrix MultiRoom is a fan coil-based product that uses a unique operational method. MultiRoom fan coils were

designed to allow one larger fan coil to serve a number of small spaces or offi ces rather than the more common method of supplying a small fan coil for each space.

MultiRoom uses a conventional single return air sensor, but unconventionally has a supply air sensor in each discharge section. Each space also has a room set-point adjuster that allows each occupant to select their desired temperature.

Reading these temperatures and considering the varying demands, MultiRoom makes decisions about what to do with the single set of valves and speed of each fan. It fi rstly decides if it should be heating or cooling. If there are one or more cooling demands, it will go into cooling mode and the largest temperature differential becomes the primary space.

Once the primary space is satisfi ed, the primary space is reassigned to the next highest demand. MultiRoom calculates how much air is required to satisfy the cooling demands before delivering that volume by varying the speed of each fan.

It’s a wonderful world, let’s keep it that way.

We won’t be testing our ErP technology on you.

With ErP labelling coming into force in September, there are lots of new products coming on to the market. Which is fine, if you fancy being a guinea pig. If, on the other hand, you’d rather stake your reputation on tried and trusted technology, you’re better off with Remeha. Having pioneered condensing technology in the 80’s, we’ve been making boilers that achieve the highest efficiency ratings for 30 years. In fact, every boiler in the Remeha family, from 9kW to 1202kW, is ErP ready, right now.If you’ve got a pet project you’d like us to look at call 0118 978 3434 or visit remeha.co.uk/erpready

CHC GroupCHC Group was appointed as the main contractor for a project that involved the supply, delivery, installation, commissioning, proving and demonstration of a new gas-fired heating plant at a number of facilities across the Southern Health & Social Care Trust.

One key element of the project involved the installation of a combined heat and power recovery system at Craigavon Area Hospital.

Renewable Project of the Year – Public

EuroHeatAt Croft Castle in Herefordshire a EuroHeat-designed biomass district heating system was installed to replace an inefficient and expensive oil-fired boiler by the Efficient Energy Centre. It now provides heat for the main castle, several estate cottages and the National Trust’s offices.

The HDG Compact 200 boiler saves Croft Castle £10,000 a year in oil costs.

Stelrad Radiators/ Cotswold Wildlife Park

When the Cotswold Wildlife Park in Gloucestershire needed to replace three outdated oil boilers that kept the tropical house warm, it looked at renewable technology to provide energy- and cost-efficient heat that turned a small corner of Gloucestershire into the tropical rain forests of South America.

The installation saw 22 camouflaged Stelrad Compact Radiators installed, bolted to a special frame.

Rural Energy and NG BaileyThis project included the largest scale of fuel feed and store-related parts that Rural Energy had delivered to date.

Three 5m filling screws were installed at a low level to fully use the space in the bunker for wood chip storage by pushing potentially unused fuel away from the “dead” areas.

The bunker has a massive 157 sq m capacity.

This £6.75m project saw Vital Energi design, construct and install the biomass energy centre and district heating system, as well

as the HIUs, internal pipework and new radiators, and vPro:ems Smart Meters. This meant that the company delivered the entire project from energy generation to customer interface.

West Whitlawburn has significant heating and hot water demands, with an approximate estimate of over 3.24 million kWh per year. The system to provide this consists of a 685kW biomass boiler, which operates in conjunction with a 50,000 litre thermal storage vessel to enhance the contribution of the biomass boiler to meet 89% of the site’s total annual heat demand.

This system delivers heating and hot water to 432 multi-storey flats across six tower blocks, 111 low-rise flats and 14 tenements closes via 2.6km of district heating pipework.

It is the first energy project of its kind for a housing cooperative and, as such, has resulted in a great deal of interest, with the Department of Energy & Climate Change visiting the project to see how it could assist similar projects to come to market.

The team had considered everything, from the supply of the fuel to how the occupants managed their new heating systems”Judges’ comment

Caplin Homes, Solar HouseThe Solar House is believed to be the UK’s first fully solar-powered new-build home. The house is designed to meet a building’s space heating, lighting and hot water requirements all year round using solar energy.

Baxi Commercial, Bernard Matthews Biomass

Baxi Commercial supplied and installed 18MW of off-site, pre-fabricated Biomass Package boiler houses using wood chip fuel to supply heat to 148 poultry sheds, replacing the existing LPG spot heaters.

Abel Environmental Services, private home

Reduce the running costs of a large residential property was the aim, with the main costs being associated with providing heating and domestic hot water.

Viessmann & GreenACT, The Lanterns Eco House

This project incorporated several technologies that have been brought together to make a state-of-the-art example of the best in renewable energy design.

Viessmann, Team Green Growers

By investing in a Viessmann Pyrot 540kW boiler and a 300kW chip Köb boiler, a Somerset strawberry grower will benefit from £160,000 a year in savings.

Viessmann, Plashet Grove Mosque

The mosque underwent a £1.5m refurbishment, funded entirely by the local community. The ambitious project involved adding two new floors to the existing structure.

BS Holdings, small-scale biomass

BS Holdings was tasked with assisting the Charles Hurst Group to decrease their overheads and increase the use of renewable technologies to ensure the future sustainability of the company’s operations in Northern Ireland.

When the Davies family approached Matrix Energy, they wanted their two-storey barn conversion to be

future-proofed against rising fuel prices and for it to be as carbon neutral as possible.

Gatton Barn Farm had previously been an open barn without insulation or a heating system. The close proximity to wildlife, trees and ground shading meant air-source heat pump technology was chosen rather than a ground source. The choice also fitted with Mr Davies’ requirement for a delay-free installation, as it avoided the necessity of planning permission.

Matrix Energy chose Viessmann products to meet the customer’s needs because the system offered flexibility and the integration of renewable technologies. Matrix Energy designed and installed a renewable heating system comprising of two Viessmann Vitocal 350-A 14kW air-source heat pumps, a Vitocell 300 cylinder 300L and 2x40 sets Vitosol 300-T solar thermal tubes.

The technologies work together for optimum efficiency and are governed by the Vitotronic 200 controls, which decide which energy source is best used at any time.

This showed flexibility in the design and the system operation, and would also be both scalable and repeatable”Judges’ comment

Thirty-eight two-, three- and four-bedroom terraces and semi-detached properties on Cowley Close in Northampton, were

identified as having traditional electric storage heaters, which were inefficient and expensive to run. Some customers could not afford to turn on the heating and others stated that their heating bills were in the region of £200 per month.

The aim was to install the most energy-efficient and affordable technology available to off-grid properties in order to remove residents from fuel poverty, while meeting emh homes’ target energy-efficiency SAP rating of 55.

A “whole house” approach was adopted, linking the replacement of the storage heaters with efficient air-to-water heat pumps to broader reinvestment works (such as the upgrading of kitchens and bathrooms or new cavity wall/loft insulation). This partnership enabled the team to carry out just one visit, thereby delivering genuine savings or differences to customers’ lives with the minimum of disruption. As a result, customers’ heating bills were more than halved and the properties moved from Band E (SAP rating: 39-54) to B or C (SAP rating: 69-70).

The project had a strong immediate consumer benefit, making a positive impact for those in fuel poverty”Judges’ comment

WINNER Vexo International (UK)

Commercial Building Services Product of the Year

Vexo looked at the dosing pot and recognised the issues with dead legs, bacteria and corrosion – so it gave the dosing pot a

well-deserved and timely face lift in the form of the X-POT. The X-POT is the only product available that safely doses chemicals into systems. By being left open to the system it is also the lowest cost side-stream fi lter, fully complying with BSRIA guidelines BG50/2013 and BG29/2012.

In the open fl ow mode, the X-POT continuously removes a percentage of the system water and fi lters it through its in-built twin fi ltration system.

First, it captures any magnetic corrosion material via its magnet grate containing rare earth magnetic rods. After passing through the magnetic grate, the system water then proceeds into the non-magnetic fi ne fi ltration compartment via the specially designed baffl e plate.

The X-POT also reduces the dissolved oxygen levels in the system water by removing micro-bubbles via the internal layout of the components and the in-built automatic air vent, before it returns to the system cleaned, fi ltered and partially de-oxygenated – all via one simple device.

Well- constructed and designed package solution with options across a wide range of system sizes”Judges’ comment

District Heating Project of the Year

Barden Energy, Armathwaite Hall Country House Hotel and Spa

Armathwaite Hall was previously using two oil boilers and seven LPG boilers to heat the hotel and spa facilities. Barden installed an Ariterm Bio 700kW biomass boiler along with extensive district heat piping to connect the multiple site locations.

Viessmann, Lower Campscott Farm

A Viessmann Pyrot biomass boiler was chosen to provide hot water and heating for the nine buildings on site. The pellet boiler provides 100% of heating and hot water requirements, at an efficiency of 92%.

Carillion Ecopod and British Gas Business, Queens Cross Housing Association, Glasgow

Carillion partnered with Glasgow’s Queens Cross Housing Association scheme to deliver an intelligent, cost-effective and efficient solution to heat nine of its residential buildings, bringing real benefit to 543 domestic flats.

Keepmoat, St Silas HouseThis project was completed with little disturbance of the residents and led to a more reliable system being installed, which will have a positive effect on all areas of the property. It was completed on target and in budget to assist the reputations of Camden and Keepmoat.

The Wood Heating Company, New Bewick, Northumberland

The project involved the installation of a 199kW chip boiler, more than 450m of district heating pipework and 10 individually designed and built interfaces to deliver heat to a pair of farmhouses, eight cottages and an office at a farm in north Northumberland.

Viessmann and Clearpower, Castle Ashby

The project involved implementing a sustainable heating supply for the village of Castle Ashby, using the nearby forest as a fuel supply, and maximising returns in relation to RHI payments and sales to end users.

City Legacy Consortium appointed Vital Energi, under instructions from Glasgow City Council, to design, install,

commission, test and operate a low-carbon energy system. Vital Energi’s bespoke system helped to decrease emissions there by 95%.

Delivering all the heating and hot water to the development, the system comprised a 28km buried network of Vital Energi’s pre-insulated pipes. The pipes are joined with the trademarked Band Muff jointing system, which can extend the installation’s lifecycle to 50 years.

The system also comes with the most accurate alarm system on the market, which can pinpoint problems to an area between one and three metres in size. The system supplies the 700 homes in the Athletes’ Village, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Emirates Arena (formerly the National Indoor Sports Arena and Velodrome) and a 120-bed care home.

In addition to the district heating network, Vital Energi also designed, installed and built the CHP energy centre. This is one of the largest district heating installations in the UK and almost double the size of the installation at the Olympics.

BSW Building ServicesBSW Building Services is a highly customer-focused organisation delivering its services to local authority and housing association clients throughout the South East.

It has developed a robust code of conduct that sets out the minimum expectations on how residents must be dealt with. The code of conduct is included in the company induction programme, which all new employees must attend.

RA Brown Heating ServicesIn 2014, RA Brown recruited two additional apprentice engineers and two office staff to help the company continue to deliver outstanding levels of customer service.

Two existing roles have been developed into new roles – business development management and senior engineer (servicing and after sales) – to enable the business to look after the customer journey from beginning to end.

Matrix EnergyThis year has seen Matrix Energy launch a new website and increase its advertising in local media.

Matrix also regularly sends staff on continuing professional development courses that are relevant to its work, as well as manufacturer training and Department of Energy & Climate Change roadshows. Matrix Energy has switched to using crimp-fit pipe connections, which are cleaner, tidier and do not require the application of heat.

Barden Energy is generating impressive growth, fuelled by an anticipated four-fold increase in its workforce at multiple site

locations by 2018. By this time trajectory growth is also expected, with it able to deliver 200 commercial and 500 domestic systems. Some 94 installs for commercial contacts are anticipated during 2015, up from 63 in 2014.

The company has made a number of changes to improve its safety standards – for example, by investing in equipment, such as “mufflers” and “rubber tracks” during excavation, that will make its presence on sites less obvious by causing minimal disruption.

Its installation team now completes a full risk assessment and method statement for all of the firm’s work. Barden Energy also only has a minimum amount of “hot works” on site, achieved with off-site welding and fabrication. Regular training courses are provided for employees using lifting equipment and engine cranes. Furthermore, CDM regulations have been implemented on the majority of installations. When installation teams are on site, they are encouraged to take a break to reinforce health and safety.

This project involved installing a combined heat and power energy solution into a 120-year-old former mortuary and boiler house. To cut stress on the Grade II-listed Victorian building, an internal steel structure was installed that acts as a “building within a building”.

Retrofit Project of the Year

Myson UKMyson UK provided nine ULOW-E2 radiators and a Floortech underfloor heating system to St Helena’s church. LC Plumbing & Heating was awarded the contract to install a completely new heating system using heating products supplied by Myson.

Uponor Building EnergyMansell Court was a post-war, five-storey property that housed an out-of-date and uneconomical office space. Linked to the Low Carbon Workplace partnership, the task for the entire team was to design, build and manage contemporary offices for organisations committed to eco-friendly operation.

The project manager, who was a member of the United Reformed Church congregation, was determined to install a ground-source heat pump system. This could only be achieved by drilling bore holes because of the extremely limited outside space, as the hall is in the centre of a market town. The customer also wished to produce hot water using solar energy, so solar thermal panels were included in the design.

A new “wet heating system” was required as the hall did not have an existing wet system. Underfloor heating was designed and installed specifically to work with the heat pump for the main hall where the whole floor was to be re-laid. Honeywell’s range of three carbon monoxide alarms is designed to protect people from the dangers of deadly carbon monoxide. The units also provide a wide range of additional features and benefits – some of which have never been seen before on the market – to assist users and organisations in taking the necessary action in the event of an alarm.

Safety Initiative of the Year

Westway ServicesWestway Services introduced a safety initiative to ensure its staff were able to feed back information regarding their tasks in a more effective manner.

The Dynamic Risk Assessments are a perfect addition to the company’s RAMS library, ensuring that company knowledge is shared among its staff and that site inductions run more smoothly.

In 2012, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) introduced a dedicated authorised persons (AP) training course covering all

aspects of electrical safe systems of work. Trainees are equipped to carry out vital safety checks on all BBES electrical installations. Participants are trained using dedicated 12v switchgear that mimics 415 volts – designed to give a detailed understanding of the range of electrical systems they will inspect.

BBES has made a commitment to achieving “zero harm” across its businesses. This means zero fatalities and zero permanently disabling injuries, and each business unit aims for zero accidents and injuries. It says that only by setting the highest standards can it retain the trust of its customers and the people using its infrastructure.

Zero harm means delivering on shared commitments, which include eliminating fatal risks, eliminating hazards, maintaining zero harm day to day, keeping the public safe from harm and working with customers.

BBES has now trained 250 employees to be APs and has a dedicated AP presence on every site that deals with the installation of electricity.

Plumb CenterFor the past three years, Plumb Center has run Wise up to CO campaigns.

The company has now gone a step further, by campaigning for carbon monoxide alarms to be mandatory in England and Wales with the installation of any carbon-burning appliance. With the Make it Law campaign, Plumb Center hopes to help save lives.

Wheatley GroupWheatley Group has successfully completed installing a minimum of one carbon monoxide detector in all the 28,076 properties across its housing stock.

It has also implemented an annual maintenance test as part of the Landlords Gas Safety Check. It tests the positioning and operation of all carbon monoxide and smoke detection within each property, and missing or defective units are replaced.

Winner HE Simm

Sponsored by

Outstanding Contribution to the Industry

Adding yet more milestones to its impressive history, HE Simm celebrated a number of additional achievements in

2014 to secure the winning of this year’s Outstanding Contribution to the Industry award.

One of the most impressive among its list of successful initiatives was the handing over of 4,000 residential units within a number of projects between July and September 2014. Included within this were numerous apartment buildings, student residences and hotels in locations around the country, for clients that ranged from blue chip construction companies to universities.

The company’s work has also been featured in a case study earlier this year (H&V News, 14 January, page 18). HE Simm is the building services contractor, working with main contractor Berkeley Homes and consultant IDA Associates to deliver the mechanical and electrical requirements for the project, which is due for completion later this year.

Providing further proof of its exemplary efforts, HE Simm has also launched an innovative site safety programme, working with health and safety specialist Aspen Thorn Safety. Starting with its senior management, the Behavioural Safety

One of the most impressive among its list of successful initiatives was the handing over of 4,000 residential units across a number of projects”

Training programme has now been rolled out to site workers. A positive response has been received from both employees and subcontractors, with reported benefits extending from health and safety to include overall operational effectiveness.

Accolades have been received by HE Simm from companies and individuals throughout the construction sector because of its attention to detail, collaborative working practices and professionalism. Its various qualities have been a major factor in its continuing growth, leading to further expansion of its workforce.

Last year closed on yet another notable announcement, with HE Simm confirming its support of the Construction Youth Trust BuildForce programme, which assists those leaving the Armed Forces to find their next career move.

While 2014 was undoubtedly another successful year for HE Simm, the fact that it also combined its demanding schedule with the launch of a major health and safety initiative while continuing to support charitable organisations and relevant activities shows that it is a thoroughly deserving winner of this year’s Outstanding Contribution to the Industry trophy.

One of HE Simm’s recent projects is Imperial College London’s student accommodation complex in Victoria Road, London, where it is working with main contractor Berkeley Homes.
