INTRODUCTIONIt is an instrument used

to record instructions send to any electronics system of aircraft.

It records specific parameters of performance of aircraft.

One more important component is CVR.

HISTORY The first prototype FDR was made in 1956 by DAVID WARREN in aeronautical research laboratory of Australia.

CONSTRUCTION [BUILT TO SURVIVE]In airline accident, the

only device that survivable the Crash Survivable Memory Units of flight data recorder and Cockpit voice recorder

The layers of materials in CSMU:

Aluminium housing Hight temp. insulationStainless-steel shell

PARAMETERS RECORDED BY FDR. .TimePressure altitudeAir speed Vertical accelerationMagnetic headingFuel flowHorizontal stabilizerControl column positionControl wheel positionRudder pedal position

COCKPIT VOICE RECORDERIt records the audio environment in the

flight deck of an aircraft for the purpose of accidents and incidents.

This is typically achieved by recording the signals of microphone and earphones of the pilot’s headset, copilot’s headset and microphones in the roof of cockpit where it can pick up audio alerts and other sound.

FDR and CVR together form BLACK BOX.

TECHNOLOGY USEDMAGNETIC TAPES

It can record upto 30 minute of data.

SOLID STATE TECHNOLOGY

It can record upto 25 hours of data.

Testing a CSMUThere are various tests that make up the cash survival sequence.Crash impactPin dropStatic crushFire testDeep-sea-submersionSalt water submersionFluid immersion

WORKING OF FDRUnderwater locator Beacon(ULB)Submergence sensor

on the side of the beacon.

Generate pulses at 37.7 kHz.

Generate sound as deep as 14,000 feet.

The beacon cannot be heard by human earut can be easily detected by sonar.

RETRIEVING INFORMATIONThis portable device can allow quick access

to the data on the BLACK BOX.Retrieval of FDR.Retrieval of CVR.Once the beacon starts pinging, it pings once

per second for 30 days.

THE FUTURE OF BLACK BOXEXThe NTSB has been

trying to implement video capabilities in black box system.

Black boxes such as EDR can be used in vehicles.

Online streaming from airplanes to base station.

ADVANTAGESIt is very useful for accident investigations. The mistakes or error can be avoided in other

aircrafts.

DISADVANTAGESThe voice recorder only captures the final

last two hours. The battery life is short. It is a small object to find.It doesn’t float. The pinger’s range is only a few miles.
