1. DESIGN AND INSTALLATION SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FOLLOWING

2013 NFPA 13 STANDARD FOR THE INSTALLATION OF SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
2. PROJECT SCOPE:
INSTALLATION OF NEW WET PIPE FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS THROUGH OUT 2
STORY BUILDING. INSTALLATION TO START AT APPROXIMATELY 5 FEET
OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING.
THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM SHALL BE HYDRAULICALLY CALCULATED TO 0.10 GPM
PER SQ. FT. OVER THE MOST REMOTE 1,500 SQ. FT. AREA.
3. BUILDING IS A RESIDENTIAL CARE FACILITY WITH AN AREA OF APPROXIMATELY
35,000 SQUARE FEET.
4. THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IN THIS BUILDING SHALL BE MONITORED BY A CENTRAL
STATION SIGNALING SYSTEM FURNISHED AND INSTALLED BY THE ALARM
CONTRACTOR. ALL TAMPER SWITCHES AND WATER FLOW INDICATORS SHALL BE
INSTALLED BY THE SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR AND WIRED TO THE CENTRAL
STATION SIGNALING SYSTEM BY THE ALARM CONTRACTOR.
5. THE SPRINKLER SUBCONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL CUTTING, SEALING,
PATCHING, AND PAINTING REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION OF THE SPRINKLER
SYSTEM. ALL PENETRATIONS OF RATED ASSEMBLIES SHALL BE FIRE STOPPED
WITH AN APPROVED MATERIAL AS PRESCRIBED IN THE CALIFORNIA BUILDING
CODE.
6. THE SPRINKLER SUBCONTRACTOR SHALL BE LICENSED BY THE STATE OF
CALIFORNIA FOR DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEMS.
7. SYSTEM DESIGN AND INSTALLATION SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 13.
MATERIALS TO BE UL LISTED OR FM APPROVED.
8. ALL PIPE SHALL BE CPVC, BLACK STEEL (ALLIED TUBE & CONDUIT WITH M-COAT),
ASTM 795 OR 53 OR DYNA FLOW, DYNA THREAD OR EQUAL.
9. ALL PIPE LENGTHS SHOWN ARE CENTER TO CENTER DIMENSIONS.
10. HANGER LOCATION FOR ALL PIPING SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 13,
SECTIONS 9.2 THROUGH 9.2.5.4. SEE HANGER SCHEDULE AND/OR DETAILS FOR
TYPES OF HANGERS USED. ALTERNATE UL AND FM HANGER METHODS ARE
ACCEPTED AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO THE OWNER.
11. PROVIDE RIGID COUPLINGS THROUGHOUT, EXCEPT FLEXIBLE COUPLINGS SHALL
BE INSTALLED AS FOLLOWS:
a. WITHIN 24 IN. OF THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF ALL RISERS;
b. ON BOTH SIDES OF CONCRETE OR MASONRY WALLS WITHIN 3 FT. OF THE WALL
SURFACE;
c. WITHIN 24 IN. OF BUILDING EXPANSION JOINTS;
d. WITHIN 24 IN. OF THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF DROPS TO HOSE LINES, RACK
SPRINKLERS, AND MEZZANINES, REGARDLESS OF PIPE SIZE;
e. WITHIN 24 IN. OF THE TOP OF DROPS EXCEEDING 15 FT. IN LENGTH TO
PORTIONS OF SYSTEMS SUPPLYING MORE THAN ONE SPRINKLER,
REGARDLESS OF PIPE SIZE;
f. ABOVE AND BELOW ANY INTERMEDIATE POINTS OF SUPPORT FOR A RISER OR
OTHER VERTICAL PIPE.
17. ALL WELDING TO BE DONE BY CERTIFIED WELDERS.
18. JOINING OF PIPE AND FITTINGS SHALL BE DONE WITH GROOVED COUPLINGS WHEN
LIGHTWALL PIPE IS USED OR THREADED CAST IRON OR DUCTILE IRON FITTINGS
WITH THREADABLE PIPE.
19. ALL INSPECTOR'S TEST CONNECTIONS AND LOW POINT DRAINS SHALL BE IN
ACCORDANCE NFPA 13 (UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE) AND SHALL BE DISPLAYED
ON SHOP DRAWINGS. MOUNTING HEIGHTS OF CONTROL VALVES SHALL BE 5'-0"
A.F.F. MOUNT CONTROL VALVES FOR INSPECTOR'S TEST CONNECTION AND LOW
POINT DRAINS INSIDE BUILDING. PIPE DRAIN LINES TO EXTERIOR OF BUILDING.
AUXILIARY DRAINS AND INSPECTOR'S TEST CONNECTIONS SHALL BE LOCATED
TIGHT AGAINST THE PERIMETER WALLS. COORDINATE WITH THE ARCHITECT FOR
ACCEPTABLE LOCATIONS.
20. TEST AND DRAIN ASSEMBLIES CAN BE USED IN LIEU OF INSPECTORS TEST
CONNECTION SHOULD BE PROVIDED AT AT THE MOST REMOTE SECOND FLOOR.
21. THE OVERHEAD PORTION OF THIS SYSTEM SHALL BE TESTED AT 200 PSI FOR 2
HOURS. THE UNDERGROUND PORTION OF THIS SYSTEM SHALL BE FLUSHED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 24 BEFORE CONNECTION WITH THE OVERHEAD SYSTEM
AND BE TESTED AT 200 PSI FOR 2 HOURS.
22. FINISHED CEILING SPRINKLERS SHALL BE WHITE CONCEALED QUICK RESPONSE.
SPRINKLERS IN T-BAR CEILING SHALL BE WHITE RECESSED QUICK RESPONSE
WITH WHITE RECESSED ESCUTCHEONS AND SHALL BE PLACED IN QUARTER POINT
OR CENTER OF 2x4 TILE.
23. SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR TO COORDINATE AND ADJUST SPRINKLERS TO
ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL, STRUCTURE AND ALL OTHER TRADES AT NO
ADDITIONAL COST.
24. OWNER SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH TEST CERTIFICATES, CARE & MAINTENANCE
BOOK, AND A SPARE HEAD CABINET WITH SPRINKLERS AND A WRENCH IN
ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 13.
25. DELIVERY OF ALL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT TO THE JOB SITE SHALL BE
SCHEDULED TO ASSURE COMPLIANCE WITH THE PREDETERMINED CONSTRUCTION
SCHEDULE. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR STORAGE AND
HANDLING ALL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT ON THE JOB SITE, INCLUDING
FURNISHING OF ANY STORAGE FACILITIES OR STRUCTURE REQUIRED.
26. UNDERGROUND PIPING FOR WATER SUPPLY SHALL BE 6" DUCTILE IRON PIPE OR
PVC.
27. ALL NEW FIRE SYSTEM PIPING (ABOVE GROUND) SHALL BE SCHEDULE CPVC ON
THE FIRST FLOOR AND 10 AND 40 BLACK STEEL IN THE ATTIC FOR INTERIOR
INSTALLATION, AND GALVANIZED FOR EXTERIOR INSTALLATION, UNLESS
OTHERWISE NOTED.
28. ALL FIRE SYSTEM EQUIPMENT TO BE UL LISTED AND/OR FM APPROVED FOR FIRE
PROTECTION USE.
29. ALL HANGERS SHALL BE INSTALLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 13; AND JOIST
AND HANGER MANUFACTURER'S INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS.
30. FIRE PROTECTION CONTRACTOR SHALL BE FIELD VERIFY ALL DIMENSIONS AND
COORDINATE WITH OTHER TRADES PRIOR TO INSTALLATION.
31. UNDERGROUND FITTINGS SHALL BE RESTRAINED USING THRUST BLOCKS IN
ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 24.
32. UNDERGROUND PIPING TO BE FLUSHED PRIOR TO ANY ABOVE GROUND PIPING
BEING CONNECTED TO THE UNDERGROUND. FLUSHING SHALL BE IN
ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 13, NFPA 24, AND DSA REQUIREMENTS.
33. PRIOR TO ANY UNDERGROUND EXCAVATION, BLUE-STAKE INFORMATION MUST BE
OBTAINED.
34. ALL UNDERGROUND PIPE SHALL BE HYDROSTATICALLY TESTED AT 200 PSI FOR 2
HOURS IN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 13, NFPA 24.
35. A COPY OF COMPLETED AND SIGNED "CONTRACTOR'S MATERIALS & TEST
CERTIFICATE FOR UNDERGROUND PIPING" SHALL BE SUBMITTED TO THE OWNER
BY THE CONTRACTOR AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PROJECT.
36. A WATER FLOW ALARM TEST SHALL BE CONDUCTED BY OPENING THE
INSPECTOR'S TEST VALVE OR ALARM BYPASS VALVE. AN ALARM MUST SOUND
WITHIN 5 MINUTES FOR LOCAL ALARM BELL (WITNESS BY PROJECT INSPECTOR.
37. CONNECTIONS TO PROTECTED PREMISES AND SUPERVISING STATION FIRE ALARM
SYSTEMS SHOULD BE TESTED TO VERIFY RECEIPT OF TRANSMISSION OF ALARMS
FROM AUTOMATIC FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS WITHIN 90 SECONDS OF
INITIATION. (WITNESSED BY PROJECT INSPECTOR).
38. SIGNAGE SHALL BE PROVIDED AS REQUIRED, INCLUDING "RISER ROOM
IDENTIFICATION".
39. FLOW SWITCH SHALL BE CONNECTED TO A 10 INCH OUTSIDE ALARM BELL OR
OTHER AUDIBLE ALARM DEVICE AT EACH RISER. APPROVED IDENTIFICATION SIGNS
SHALL BE PROVIDED ON THE OUTSIDE ALARM BELL "SPRINKLER FIRE ALARM -
WHEN ALARM SOUNDS CALL 911 / FIRE DEPARTMENT".
40. A LABEL OF THE SELF-ADHESIVE TYPE SHALL BE PLACED ON THE FIRE
DEPARTMENT CONNECTION OR ON THE RISER FOR FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM AND
SHALL INCLUDE THE DATE OF INSTALLATION AND/OR DATE SERVICE WAS
PERFORMED AND LICENSED NUMBER OF PERSON PERFORMING SERVICE WORK.
HYDRAULIC CALC PLATE SHOULD BE PROVIDED ON THE RISER.
41. SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR SHALL COMPLETE AND SIGN CONTRACTOR'S MATERIAL
AND TEST CERTIFICATE FOR THE ABOVEGROUND PIPING. THIS FORM SHALL BE
GIVEN TO THE PROJECT INSPECTOR.
42. REFERENCE THE CIVIL DRAWINGS FOR ADDITIONAL FIRELINE INFORMATION.
43. REFER TO THE ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS FOR ACTUAL BUILDING DIMENSIONS

Hangers and Bracing
Because BlazeMaster pipe is rigid, it requires fewer supports than flexible plastic
systems. Most hangers designed for metal pipe are suitable for BlazeMaster pipe. Do
not use undersized hangers. Hangers with sufficient load bearing surface shall be
selected based on pipe size, i.e., 1½" hangers for 1½" pipe. The hanger shall not have
rough or sharp edges which come in contact with the pipe. The pipe hangers must
comply with the requirements in NFPA 13, 13R, and 13D. For Quick Response upright
sprinklers, rigid hangers secured to the ceiling shall be used. For installation of
exposed BlazeMaster CPVC, listed support devices for thermoplastic sprinkler piping or
other listed support devices shall be used which mount the piping directly to the ceiling
or sidewall.
When a sprinkler head activates, a significant reactive force can be exerted on the pipe.
With a pendent head, this reactive force can cause the pipe to lift vertically if it is not
properly secured, especially if the sprinkler drop is from small diameter pipe. The
closest hanger shall brace the pipe against vertical lift-up.
Since BlazeMaster CPVC is more ductile than metallic sprinkler pipe, it has a greater
capacity to withstand earthquake damage.In areas subject to earthquakes,
BlazeMaster fire sprinkler systems shall be designed and braced in accordance with
local codes or NFPA 13.
