1) By Initial Cost & Running cost

Power Station Initial Cost Running cost

Steam power Plant lower than those of Hydro & Nuclear.

Higher than hydro & nuclear.

Hydro Power Plant very high because of dam construction.

Practically NIL; no fuel needed

Diesel Power Plant Lowest compared to all other power stations.

Highest due to Diesel prices.

Nuclear Power Plant Highest due to complex nuclear reactors. Second lowest

2) By Location & Space required

Power Station Location Space required

Steam power Plant Where there is ample supply of water and coal. Needs sufficient space for all

equipment.

Hydro Power Plant Where large reservoirs can be obtained by dam construction.

Needs very large space for constructing a dam

Diesel Power Plant Where there is required space & water, thus can be located anywhere.

Needs very little space for all equipment

Nuclear Power Plant Where there is enough supply of water, but must not be too far away from populated areas.

Needs the least space, compared any other power station of equal capacity

3)By Overal Efficiency & Stand-by losses

Power Station Efficiency Losses

Steam power PlantThis is plant is ≈ 25% efficient.

This is due to Boiler remaining in operation even if turbine is switched off.

Hydro Power Plant This is plant is ≈ 85% efficient. This Plant has no stand-by

losses

Diesel Power PlantThis is plant is ≈ 35% efficient. This Plant has lesser stand-by

losses

Nuclear Power PlantThis is plant is ≈ 55% efficient This Plant has less stand-by

losses

4)By Limit of source of power

Power Station Limit of source of power

Steam power PlantHas most Limited fuel Reserves.

Hydro Power Plant Has undependable water source due to weather variations.

Diesel Power PlantHas Limited fuel Reserves.

Nuclear Power PlantHas sufficient fuel Reserves.

5) By Cost of Fuel & Clean emissions

Power Station Cost of Fuel Justification

Clean emissions Justification

Steam power Plant Maximum, due to constant demand of coal & transportation.

Has highest polluting emissions.

Hydro Power Plant Practically nil. Practically no emission

Diesel Power Plant Higher than Hydro and Nuclear power stations.

Has cleaner emissions compared to steam & nuclear power stations.

Nuclear Power PlantMinimum, due to small quantities of fuel required.

Has cleaner emissions compared to steam power stations but produces nuclear waste, which is currently an unsolved problem.

6) By Maintenance costs

Power Station Maintenance costs Justification

Steam power Plant High. Skilled staff required.

Hydro Power Plant Lowest.

Diesel Power Plant Low.

Nuclear Power Plant Highest. Highly skilled and specialised staff required.

7) By Transmission & Distribution costsPower Station Transmission & Distribution

costs JustificationSteam power Plant

Low. Plant is close to load center.

Hydro Power Plant Highest. Plant is furthest from load center.

Diesel Power PlantLowest. Plant is at load center.

Nuclear Power PlantHigh. Plant is far from load center.

8) By Starting

Power Station Starting JustificationSteam power Plant Longest starting time.

Hydro Power Plant Shortest starting time.

Diesel Power Plant Short starting time.

Nuclear Power Plant Long starting time.
