Defination : A dumper is a vehicle designed for carrying bulk

material, often on building sites.

Page 4: Dumpers 2

History : Dumpers are distinguished from dump trucks by

configuration: a dumper is usually an open 4-wheeled vehicle with the load skip in front of the driver, while a dump truck has its cab in front of the load. The skip can tip to dump the load; this is where the name "dumper" comes from. They are normally diesel powered. A towing eye is fitted for secondary use as a site tractor. Dumpers with rubber tracks are used in special circumstances and are popular in some countries.

2:Terex TA6 Site Dumper: Designed as dedicated

haul-and-dump vehicles, the 6-ton Terex site dumpers (models TA6 and TA6s) have a power train that combines a 74-horsepower Tier 4-Final JCB EcoMAX engine with hydrostatic drive

pounds payload capacity and 1.05-cubic-yard bucket capacity. New 1501 articulated site dumper from wacker neuson has 3,307 pounds payload capacity and 1.05-cubic-yard bucket capacity. Powered by a Yanmar 3-cylinder, 22.8-horsepower diesel. Folding ROPS protects and can be folded down for transporting.

4:MZ Imer Site Dumper: The four-wheel drive MZ 2000 HD site dumper

carries 4,400 pounds of payload, heaped to 1.85 cubic yards, on a rigid front axle and oscillating rear. Compact Excavator, importer of IHI brand skid steers and mini excavators, now markets the MZ Imer site dumper in North America. 5:WACKER NEUSON: Wacker Neuson brings three new articulated

site dumpers to the U.S. market with material-moving capacities of 2,205 (model 1001), 6,614 (model 3001) and 13,227 pounds (model 6001). Their dump bodies swivel 180 degrees for dumping to either side of the machine. Uses of Dumpers:Modern dumpers have payloads of up to 10 tons (11 short tons; 9.8 long tons) and usually steer by articulating at the middle of the chassis (pivot steering). They have multi-cylinder diesel engines, some turbocharged, electric start and hydraulics for tipping and steering and are more expensive to make and operate. An A-frame known as a ROPS (Roll-Over Protection) frame, may be fitted over the seat to protect the driver if the dumper rolls over.

Uses of Dumpers:

dumpers have FOPS (Falling Object Protection) as well. Lifting skips are available for discharging above ground level. Dumpers with rubber tracks are used in special circumstances and are popular in some countries.

Safe Systems of Work:Managers play a key role in ensuring the safe use of compact dumpers.Managers need to ensure that safe vehicles are provided and that safe systems of work are planned and put into practice.Managers should ensure that all site vehicles:Are capable of safely performing the tasks they are expected to perform. Are operated and maintained according to the manufacturers instructions. Are driven by competent drivers.

Page 16: Dumpers 2

Construction Accidents: Site dumpers are involved in around a third of

construction transport accidents, causing many deaths and serious injuries, particularly to drivers. The main causes of dumper accidents are: overturning on slopes and rough ground and at the edges of excavations, embankments etc. travelling when a high-lift skip is in its raised position. Incidents where a pedestrian is run over by the front wheels of the dumper.

Page 17: Dumpers 2

Construction Accidents:

Driver thrown from vehicle while travelling over rough ground.Driver error due to lack of experience and training, e.g accidental operation of controls

Page 18: Dumpers 2

Maintenance :

Managers should: Ensure that all vehicles are properly maintain and safe to operate. undertake regular maintenance and vehicle checks in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations; operate an effective system for reporting, and taking any required action on, any defects that occur.

NOTE: Of the 7 fatal accidents involving site dumpers in

the 5 years to 2010 in Ireland, 6have been related to dumpers overturning. Always ensure that adequate precautions are taken to prevent a dumper overturning or overrunning an edge, when tipping or driving near, excavations, embankments, earthworks, water or to any lower area. Simple control measures such as use of chocks and stop blocks can prevent these accidents
