INTRODUCTION :
• A Tesla coil is a two stage transformer which high voltage,high frequency, power generator, primarily built forconducting experiments and to observe phenomenonassociated with alternating electricity.
• With this coil, Tesla was able to generate voltages of suchmagnitude, they would shoot out of the apparatus as boltsof lightning.

About 100 years ago NikolaTesla invented his "Tesla Coil". Forabout 70 years hobbists andengineers alike have beenconstructing their own Coils.

PRIMARY CAPACITANCE : The primary capacitor is used
with the primary coil to create the primary LC circuit.
A resonate sized capacitorcan damage a NST, thereforea Larger Than Resonate (LTR)sized capacitor is stronglyrecommended.
A LTR capacitor will alsodeliver the most powerthrough the Tesla coil.

SECONDARY COIL :
The secondary coil is used with the top load to create the secondary LC circuit.
Magnet wire is used to windthe coil.
There’s always a little spacebetween turns, so theequation assumes the coil turns are 97% perfect.

ADVANTAGES :
Allows a wide range of firing rates to be investigated with a variable speed rotary spark gap, without encountering beating and surging.
Allows power throughput to be controlled by altering the rotary speed.
Charging is slow immediately after the spark gap fires.
Provides excellent load sharing if a 3 phase rectifier is used at higher powers.
DISADVANTAGES :
More complex circuit is required.
Greater cost.
Large DC smoothing capacitor is needed unless 3-phase power is used. Such a capacitor is expensive, and stores lethal energy.
High voltage, high inductance charging inductor is needed. This is a specialised part and may be difficult to obtain.Requires a 3-phase supply to be most effective.
Current draw is non-sinusoidal.

After studying and developing the model of TESLA COIL we came tofollowing conclusion:
We are able to generate high voltage with high frequency and itcan be used for testing the apparatus for switching surges.
It can also be used for study of visual corona and ionization ofgases under the electrical stress.
It can also transmit the electrical power wirelessly up to certaindistance depends upon its ratings.
