Presentation Outline
• Overview of the building enclosure
• The perfect wall
• Rain penetration control (windows)
• Air control
• Thermal control
• Details/Examples
Context
• Performance expectations rising – Faster design and construction – All weather construction – Always price pressure
• Much more complexity – Many different assemblies – Many different layers – Many different materials
5
Contexte
6
Trends
• Higher insulation levels – over R-20/RSI3.5
• Higher air tightness levels – Testing commercial buildings
• NBCC 9.36- Effective R-values – Account for thermal bridging
• Wood-frame 4-6 storey, residential 7
Tendances

The world is complex enough Choose to make it simpler
The “Perfect Wall”
• Finish of whatever – May need to be ventilated
• Control continuity is the key – #1-Water:
Drainage gap + drainage plane
– Air: Air barrier – Heat: Insulation – Vapor: vapor barrier
The “Perfect Wall”
• N’importe quel parement – Possiblement nécessaire de ventiler
• Continuité est clé! – #1 L’eau:
Espace de drainage + plan de drainage
– Air: Pare-air – Thermique: Isolation – Vapeur: Pare-vapeur
Rain Control • Rain shedding • Drainage • Must integrate with
flashing, drainholes • Overlap everything • No holes
Contrôle d’eau pluviale
• Pare-pluie • Drainage • Doit incorporer les
solins et les chantepleures
• chevauché • Aucun trou
Air Control • Continuous Air Barrier
– Continuous – Stiff – Strong – Durable – Air Impermeable
• Only very small holes tolerable
Contrôle d’air • Pare-air
– Continu – Raide ? – Résistant – Durable – Étanche à l’air
• Seulement des très petits trous sont tolérables
Heat Control • Continuous Thermal Barrier
– Even R10 is good
• Accept small penetrations if no comfort or durability issues
• Windows are a major concern – Heat loss/gain – Solar gain
Institutional Perfect Wall
• CMU or conc backup
Mur parfait institutionnel
• Bloc de béton ou béton

Enclosures No. 21 /
Commercial: Steel studs
22
Must use more expensive rigid board insulation
Commercial: studs en acier
23
24
Insulation in stud cavity
• Need vapor permeable air-water membrane
• Wood studs usually have cavity insulation
25
• Higher R-values • Can use lower cost fiber insulation • Reduces wall thickness
26
• Valeurs R supérieures • Peut utiliser isolant en fibre
minéral moins cher • Épaisseur du mur réduite
• Envelope renovation?

Challenges to Simplicity
• Rain leaks • Thermal “leaks” (= thermal bridges) • Air leaks
• Leaks occur at joints, penetrations, windows,
balconies, cladding attachments, etc.
• Specifying material performance is only the start… designers must provide system
29
30
Building Science 2008 Enclosures No. 31 /
32/175
• Details demand the same approach as the enclosure.
• Scaled drawings required at
- change in plane - change in material - change in trade

Planning
Air Control
• Many materials are air impermeable – Gypsum, steel, concrete, plastic, wood, etc.
• BUT… how to ensure continuity
• Details, penetrations, windows, pipes
35
Contrôle de l’air
• Beaucoup de matériaux sont étanche à l’air – Plâtre, acier, béton, plastique, bois, etc.
• MAIS… comment s’assurer de la continuité??
• Détails, pénétrations, fenêtres, tuyaux
36
Exterior Air Barriers
• Many more penetrations and details with interior air barrier approach
• Exterior is preferred today
37
38
Permeable Air Barriers
• Air and water control membranes must be vapor permeable if outside significant insulation
• Most wood-frame walls with have cavity insulation!
39

42
Fully-adhered Membranes
• Performance in field is not the same as steady state testing
• Holes in membrane are less of a problem
43
Membranes auto-adhésives
• Performance in field is not the same as steady state testing
• Trous dans la membranes moins grave
44
Thermal control
• NBCC 9.36 is coming ... will require true R-value
• Steel studs and floor slabs are thermal bridges
Thermal Control
• Good insulation …. Ruined by bad design • Eg R-20 SPF with Z-girts = R-8
47

Insulation and Thermal Bridges No. 49/65
Thermal Resistance • Transparent Glazing (R3 to R4) • Aluminum Frames (R1) • Balconies (R1) • Spandrels (R5)
We must get over our addiction to glass! Low R-value High Solar Gain
Insulation and Thermal Bridges No. 50/65
Contrôle thermique • Vitrage transparent (R3 to R4) • Cadres en aluminium (R1) • Balcons (R1) • Spandrels (R5)

Conclusions • The world is changing
– More demands on building performance • One must have an enclosure system
– Water – Air – Thermal – Vapor
• Joints penetrations = details! and details • Solutions are not simple, but can be simplified using
a complete system
70
Conclusions
• The world is changing – More demands on building performance
• There are new materials that are becoming available that have rather interesting properties, like SA VP materials, FLASHINGS etc, systems and accessories
• Try to figure out which systems are appropriate for your projects!
• We need to update them
