Switching can be divided into two broad categories.

Circuit switching
Datagram approach
Virtual circuit approach
Circuit switching
• Establish a dedicated communications channel.
Simple Switched Network
Circuit Switching
• Dedicated communication path between two stations
• Three phases– Establish– Transfer– Disconnect

POGIL – Students search and give the solution about switching techniques available for digital traffic.
Packet Switching Networks
• Datagram• Virtual circuit
Datagram Approach
• Each packet is treated independently of all other packets.
• Diagram shows how the datagram approach can be used to deliver four packets from station A to Station B.
Virtual Circuit • A preplanned route is
established before any packets are sent, then all packets follow the same route.
• A route between stations is set up prior to data transfer.
• All the data packets then follow the same route.
• But there is no dedicated resources reserved for the virtual circuit! Packets need to be stored-and-forwarded
Activity -3 Scale up –Students focus on searching the differences of packet switching networks and circuit switching networks.
IP addressing Methods
The IP address is a 32-bit address.
IP address classified in different class .• CLASS A • CLASS B • Class C• Class D• Class E

Scale-Up: 4 Groups of students, Each group discusses about the 4 different Classes(A,B,C & D) of IP address and list out the drawbacks of each and every IP address classes.
