This is indeed a poignant moment for us at Colombo Dockyard as we celebrate 40th Anniversary of operations, established in 1974 August 1st. We felt it was only fitting that we mark this great milestone in a simple religious ceremony to evoke blessings on our most valuable asset, the workers.

Over the four decades we have grown in strength and stature, gaining wisdom and experience with each step.I wish to draw your focus to a specific moment in our distinguished past. The year was 1993, a defining moment for Colombo Dockyard.We were confident that the proposed strategic alliance with Onomichi Dockyard would be the harbinger of good fortune in the years ahead and we were right. The tactical move on the part of the Japanese too, proved to be mutually beneficial as evidenced by Colombo Dockyards performance in the ensuing years.Almost immediately Colombo Dockyard was able to reap the benefits of change, helped also by the strong historical ties between the two countries.

The similarities in the cultural dynamics and social value systems of the two countries eased our transition to a hybrid of Sri Lankan/Japa-nese corporate philosophy. Over the years we have also gained immeasurably from Onomichi’s experience and superior technical know-how. If anything, the Japanese management concept has reinforced not only our engineering skills,but also provided a deeper understanding into human resources management. We feel proud that dockyard has used these resources wisely to improve overall efficiency by fine tuning our processes. Furthermore, we have been inspired to showcase our ship repair and shipbuilding capabilities on an expanding international landscape.

Our prudent approach has deservedly earned us the reputation as a consistent, high quality maritime solutions provider. In the recent times of tough recession market conditions, Colombo Dockyard has managed to take timely and prudent decisions with a customer centric approach, that have strengthened the companies stand as a reliable shipyard able to provide high quality product/ service meeting the owners requirements.

In the recent past we have been successful in carving out certain niche markets. Our expertise is highly recognized and sought after across the globe, particularly in the manufacture of sophisticated Offshore Vessels. We are also gaining momentum in the region as a Builder of Efficient, Economic & Environment friendly Passenger vessels. These are definitely encouraging signs and provide the impetus to strive for bigger things in the decade to come.

While gaining a deeper understanding of the business perspective, in the future we will continue to further develop bi-lateral ties between Sri Lanka & Japan and work towards nurturing sustainable long term relationships. In conclusion, I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who have stood by us, over the past four decades. To all the Colombo Dockyard staff, clients and all stakehold-ers in our business, in this anniversary issue of COLDOCK TIMES is a toast to your unquestionable loyalty. Throughout the four decades since its inception in August 1st 1974, Colombo Dockyard has remained the live wire of Ship repair, shipbuilding activities in one of the most strategic locations in the marine map. From the fledgling operation that commenced in as a small repair outfit in 1974, we have grown to be a dynamic engineer-ing organization in the forefront of Sri Lanka’s economic development and a source of national pride.

However, we have always remained true to our conventional values. Following a simple, diligent and prudent work ethic, we have accepted our accomplishments with subtle grace and humility. This fortieth anniversary milestone event was celebrated in simple religious events to evoke blessings on the dedicated workers, the most treasured asset.

Our forte has always been high quality ship repair and shipbuilding. We are proud to have nurtured this specialty from its infancy in Sri Lanka. Over the decades we passionately learned the nuances of our trade and now stand tall as master craftsmen and master builders of countless sea faring vessels. We believe the nature and complexity of our work alone speaks volumes of our skills and expertise in the field. Yet we continue to embrace each milestone with humbleness and gratitude to our pioneers, as we march forward in our journey challenging the norm to achieve greater things.

The partnership with Onomichi Dockyard Co. Ltd. Japan, in 1993 had been the pivotal point in our long and illustrious journey so far. We are indebted to Onomichi for their decision to invest in us 21 years ago, despite the fragile business environment in the country at the time. The recent years have seen the shipping industry going through one of the worst recessions in the history; the expected recovery has been long overdue since 2012.

The industry landscape and competitive forces in the region and globally have changed dramatically over the past decade, thus creating a highly competitive scenario for all shipyards including Colombo. I am confident that as a close knit team we have the neces-sary where withal to face any challenge successfully and guide Colombo Dockyard across these economically turbulent times.

I take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders who have been with Colombo Dockyard over this eventful journey over the past four decades, during good times and tough times. Rest assured we will ensure that all efforts are taken to provide our valued clients a high quality service level meeting world class standards.

Colombo Dockyard established in 1974 August 1, with the prime objective of providing ship repair facilities to the local industry requirements. The shipyard had evolved over the last four decades from a small time repair work shop to a full service ship repair facility acclaimed as an Internation-al shipyard competing with the best in the world. In addition to attending to ship repair work, the shipyard was also entrusted with the responsibility of building small patrol boats to the Sri Lanka Navy and Work Boats for the ports that were in operation during the early era.

The ship repair sector has been the key sector that has been driving the shipyard to greater heights over past decades, across recessions 1990’s, 2008-13 and boom periods 1980’s, 2004-7. The Shipbuilding sector has been the driving force of the technological development of the Shipyard through the acquisition of the skills and knowledge necessary to build highly sophisticated Offshore Support Vessels for the Oil and Gas exploration and production domain.

In the early days when the facility had been in its infant stages the workforce numbers were small and the Colombo Dockyard team’s dynamism managed to nurture this operation to handle many challenging repair projects, gaining a reputation even in those early days from international callers, especially Greek, Indian, Pakistan and Russian. Many foreign vessels were Greek trampers and Russian research vessels and tugs that were accommodated in Drydock 1,2 and 3. The local fleet owned by Ceylon Shipping Corporation (CSC) was regular callers patronizing Colombo as their home port. This was the formative decade of the shipyard, which was given guidance by astute visionary leaders, who had identified the potential of Colombo Dockyard even at these initial stages. Boatbuilding was done in small scale, building small and less complex boats to meet the local requirements of the Sri Lanka Navy namely 14 m Patrol Boats, 20 m Patrol Boats and 40 m Offshore Patrol Vessels and Towing Tugs, Barges, Launches for the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

1974 – 1984: FORMATIVE DECADE

This decade had a mixed effect on the repair industry, as the shipping market peaked to highest levels in the history (2007/8) and subse-quent historic economic crash. The tanker fleet which had been shipyards core business generator had been phased out, due to IMO regulations coming into force for double hulled tankers (2010).

1984 – 1994: CONSOLIDATION AND EXPANSION

This decade had been where many historical milestones were reached, the 125,000 DWT drydock was commissioned (1988) the first Tanker was secured for Dock No. 04 (MT. Arun Khetarpal owned by Shipping Corporation of India. The land mark repair project of collision damage repairs to MT. Palanimalai (Also owned by Shipping Corporation of India) was successfully completed with 25 days, where 100 Tons of steel was renewed in record time, gaining commendation from the owners. During this decade vessels handled varied from Tankers, Cattle carriers, French Naval vessels, General Cargo vessels to Bulk Carriers. Unique vessels we had handled during this era are French naval vessel Jules Vern, MV. Dulos (Library Ship) and MV. Mukairish Al Sades (Cattle Carrier).The Shipbuilding activity too grew gradually with the experience gained and started exporting boats to Maldives and Republic of Burma. Shipbuilding also augmented its activities by gaining aluminium boat building technology to build fast patrol boats for the Sri Lanka Navy.The turning point for the shipyard from government owned to a fully privatized facility with majority stake holding by Onomichi Dockyard Co. Ltd, Japan came during the year 1993.

1994-2004: VENTURING IN TO HIGH END COMPLICATED PROJECTS

This was the decade which transformed the facility to a truly interna-tional shipyard, with the influence of the Japanese Management. Accreditation to ISO 9001: 2000 quality certification by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance, UK was a significant milestone achieved during this era. The repair sector was performing majority of the tanker repairs in Drydock No. 04, where in some years we had carried out drydocking of 12-14 tankers annually. This era also marked the first Offshore Drill unit repairs MODU. Sagar Vijay, major layup repairs we had carried out successfully. Shipbuilding progressed well with majority of the aluminium fast patrol boat requirement of the Sri Lanka Navy which formed the backbone of the fleet being supplied by Colombo Dockyard. In addition, with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority’s modernization of the Colombo Port, building of highly complex Harbour Berthing Tugs was entrusted to Colombo Dockyard, which was successfully carried out. As socially responsible corporate from the start, special focus on yard safety practices were given high priority during this decade. This also helped the company to take on mega projects in the marine sector as well as land based, such as the construction of the LPG storage Terminal for Shell in Muthurajawela.

As a result multiple drydocking of various types of smaller vessels were the common feature for Dock No. 04 (125,000 DWT) in recent years.This decade can be considered as one of the most important eras of the shipyard, where the leanings from the ship repair / Offshore Engineering sector on highly sophisticated and challenging projects were handled, such as retrofit repairs to ORV. Sagar Kanya (2006) and retrofit repairs to Floating Dock FDN -1 (2005).

The experience and the confidence gained from successfully handling these projects, laid the foundation and paved the way for the shipyard to venture aggressively into international shipbuilding projects focusing the offshore industry. This was a significant turning point in the history of the shipyard, from a small player to a truly international ship repair and building facility, which is now recognized by the market as a serious contender. Since the Shipyard stepped in to the Offshore sector in 2005, there has not been turning back as the Shipyard’s market position has grown from strength to strength and has been able to carve out a position as a reputable Offshore Support Vessel building yard. These Offshore Support Vessels are in operation in oil exploration hot spots such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil, Russia, India, Africa, Singapore etc… In addition, the shipyard has also been successful in building passenger vessels. During this period, we have built 250 Passenger cum 100 Ton Cargo Vessels and 400 Passenger

cum 250 Ton Cargo Vessels for the Government of India, which amply demonstrate the credibility the shipyard has achieved internationally. In the year 2008-9 the Ship Repair sector recorded the highest revenue volume in the history of theshipyard, even though global economic crash and the shipping industry recession experienced in 2008. End to the war situation in the country in May 2009, had been a great relief to all business ventures in the country, especially in the shipping sector. The negative aspects such as high war risk premium for vessels calling Colombo had been gradually lifted creating a level playing field for all players. The positive image of Sri Lanka on all fronts also had played a key role in helping to attract high end ship owners to Colombo.

Colombo had developed its reputation as a hub for Offshore Support Vessel Repairs during this period, where many of the offshore support vessels from Bourbon Offshore, France, Tidewater-USA, ONGC, SCI and Great Offshore, India. Resulting in the yard repair teams gained a wealth of experience into this high end offshore sector projects. Colombo Dockyard’s services and capacity were recognized by global ship owners and managers. Securing of the Frame Agreements with Bernhard Schulte Ship Management (HK) and AP Moller Maersk for repairs to their fleets was established. This is a proud achievement Colombo Dockyard, competing head to head with bigger shipyards located across the globe.

Competition has increased in giant leaps, with many new facilities starting operations regionally as well as internationally such as in Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering Company Limited, Gujarat, L&T Shipbuilding, Katupalli – Tamil Nadu, Sembmarine Kakinada, Chowgule and Company Private Ltd. (Shipbuilding), Goa. International yards: Oman Shipyards (Duqm) and Nakilat Damen Shipyards Qatar along with the many Chinese yards also intensified the competition.

The tight market conditions over the past few years look to be continu-ing for at least the next year/s as well. We have managed to survive one of the longest recessions in the shipping history up to now. Collectively as one team we have to work to increase the productivity and reducing the cost. As such we compete with the regional shipyards that have come up in numbers over the past decade. The fleet size changes on account of the industry regulatory require-ments, such as the double hulled tankers phasing out of the single hulls, which created a market driven change in the fleet size. The double hulled vessels were beamier and many of the bigger tankers cannot be accommodated in our Drydock No. 04. (125,000 DWT). The type and the size of vessels available in the regional market have changed from larger tankers to smaller container carriers, bulk carriers, general cargo carriers, dredger to offshore support vessels. This change in the vessel mix had resulted in Drydock No. 04 (125,000 dwt) planning many multiple drydockings with average 2-3 vessels per drydocking. Systems integration and streamlining of the processors has been successfully achieved by introducing Integrated Commercial and Production Module (ICPM). Streamlining the proces-sors and providing accurate information, where it is needed for decision making. This task has been achieved by our in house IT team creating a customised unique system to meet the shipyards operation-al requirements. These are some of the successful initiatives that have been carried out during the recession period to gain better control of the projects and minimizing the costs across the production process. The Shipbuilding sector too faces similar challenges as we compete against international shipyards during these trying times. For the future, we are aggressively marketing to secure vessels in the Offshore, Passenger, Harbour and Naval segments from the existing

markets as well as new geographical markets. The Shipyard’s focus is to serve the niches in the Shipbuilding arena with greater focus on higher end, technologically complex vessels. The herculean task of facing the market challenges and guiding the shipyard to a stronger position is in secure hands of industry veterans Mr. Akihiko Nakauchi, Chairman and Mr. Ranil Wijegunawardena, Managing Director / CEO.The formula for success of this unique engineering establishment, boils down to true commitment and drive in pursuit of excellence from all involved, starting from the pioneering group in the early 70’s to all the teams that have successfully carried the batton, have contributed in numerous ways, from innovative engineering ideas to pure sweat, to maneuver Colombo Dockyard’s journey safely across the annals of time. This journey, hand in hand with its majority stakeholder (since 1993 March) Onomichi Dockyard Co. Ltd., Japan, have been exciting and eventful, creating much needed employment in the engineering sector. Thus contributing as much as two percent of Sri Lanka’s total export revenue in recent times has been instrumental in spearheading the frontiers of Sri Lankan industrialization beyond our shores to international markets. To mark this significant milestone, religious events were planned on the 1st and 2nd of August 2014 to evoke blessings on the employees and pioneering teams. On the 1st August at 5.00 PM a ‘Pahan Pooja” was organized at the Deepaduththaramya Temple, Kotahena. On the 2nd of August at 08 AM a special service was organized at the St. Andrews church, Modera.

The odyssey of excellence continues.

SeaChange Maritime (S) Pte Ltd., Singapore placed confidence in Colombo Dockyard with its third container carrier for repairs to MV. Niara (GRT: 24,724, LOA: 200.00 M, Beam: 30.50 M) called in for her drydock repairs during the last week of April 2014.The Colombo Dockyard was the best option for the owners/ managers given the strategic geographic location, with minimal diversion to join the trading with ease for East bound or West bound marine routes. Colombo Dockyard had successfully delivered the previous container carriers MV. Imara(August 2013) and MV.Leo Mono(February 2014) successfully meeting the owners stringent requirements, resulting in owners placing the third vessel for repairs without any hesitation. Special care was taken to plan out the drydocking window, in order the owners will get the best productive slots scheduling the vessel avoiding local holiday periods in consultation with the owners / managers. During this drydocking call the work package covered repairs in all sectors; The project duration was driven by these path critical jobs: Tail shaft and 3 Nos intermediate shaft bearings survey carried out before and after repair, intermediate shaft bearings load tested, Propeller Silicone painting carried out meeting all requirements, Main Engine 02 units overhauled, main engine big end, cross head, main and thrust bearing surveyed. Hatch Covers repairs on 15 Nos with each 20t weight. Tank internal and shell plate steel repairs approxi-mately 3 Tons, 9 Nos Seawater pipes renewed. Overhauling of 06 Nos Electrical motors. Overhauling 5 Nos engine room pumps, 45Ton 2 Nos deck crane load tested, gang way and combination ladder repairs carried out, static and dynamic load tested, fuel oil tanks heating coil pressure test and repairs carried out, Heat exchangers

cleaning and pressure testing, Routine Dry Dock work related repairs - Sea Valves, Boilers, Hull painting, Anchor crown pin renewal and anchor chain related routing work.The project team was headed by Ship Manager Mr. Ajith Kariaypperu-ma – who was well supported by all production departments in redeliv-ering this project. Shipyard mustered all resources and a collective approach helped to catch up on the slipped-up schedule, to provide a satisfactory final output to the total project. The owner’s interests were looked after by Mr. Damir Glavan – Technical Director and Mr. Petar Karaman -Technical Manager during this drydocking call. The container carrier was accommodated at an alongside berth on arrival and subsequently drydocked in the 125,000 DWT dock No. 04 for her repair requirements and sailed directly from the drydocks. The repairs were carried out meeting the NKK Class society requirements. Mc LARENS SHIPPING LIMITED handled the local husbanding work smoothly.

This Vessel has been designed for the carriage of Passengers and general cargo, between the Mainland and Lakshadweep Islands and inter island routes. Once this vessel gets in to operation, it will ease the congestion and will provide uninterrupted service for passengers and freight from Cochin to Lakshadweep islands for a journey which generally takes around 20 hours. MV Corals, which is 99 meters in length, is perfectly designed to handle Sea waves and provide passengers with a smooth and stable voyage. The Vessels propulsion consists of two medium speed 4 stroke YANMAR Diesel Engines of 1920 kW each driving a Controllable Pitch Propeller through a reduc-tion gear box giving an efficient, economical and environmentally friendly propulsion outfit with reduced fuel consumption and increased payload capacity. 4 Numbers YANMAR Main Diesel Generator sets of approximately 600 kW each provides the entire electric power supply required by the Vessel.

The Vessel achieves a speed of 15 knots at weather condition up to BF3 with the fully intended payload, which will greatly reduce the travel time of the journey. The Ship offers different classes of accom-modation for the Passengers. 10 First Class Passenger berths, 40 Second Class Passenger berths and 350 Bunk Class Passenger berths are available for selection. disembarkation at Lakshadweep Islands. All Passenger accommoda-tion spaces are fully air-conditioned including the stairways. The Ships cabins and public spaces have been outfitted using panels and furniture supplied by Nagasaki Sempaku Sobi of Japan,maintaining very high aesthetic standards.

The Ship also has a cafeteria and a snack bar, entertainment lounge, Prayer Halls, Gymnasium and upper-deck promenade to keep the passengers occupied and entertained during the sea voyage. To attend to cases of medical emergencies, a Doctor and Hospital facilities also have been provided. The Ship has two well equipped Galleys with premium catering solutions offering meals to the Passengers and the Ship crew. One number passenger lift has also been provided to transfer passengers between the public areas and cabins on deck 2 to 6.Special attention has been paid to maintain noise and vibration levels in accommodation and working spaces in accordance with the IMO requirements providing greater comfort for the Passengers and better working environment for the crew.

The main emphasis of this vessel has been to provide ample space for all passengers while increasing the cargo capacity.In addition to the Passengers the vessel has been designed to also carry 200 Tons of Dry Cargo, 25 tons of refrigerated cargo, 450 Tons of Fresh water, 400 tons of fuel, 15 Tons of Lub oil, 40 Tons of Baggage, 30 Tons of Stores and Inventory with an endurance of 10 days at sea. Sigma paint coating helps prevent frictional losses and also produces a fuel saving effect in addition to long term protection against under water fouling. Waste will be treated by an onboard waste-oil incinerator or discharged to shore facilities in port. Bridge

The vessel has been equipped with life saving and personal protective appliances to comply with latest rule requirement. Safety equipment includes life boats, rescue boats, inflatable life rafts, and marine chute evacuation systems.On the bridge two JRC radar systems include automatic radar plotting aids. The navigation console features a gyrocompass, an autopilot system, an electromagnetic log and echo sounder, a magnetic compass and a differential global positioning system navigator. Other bridge equipment includes a VHF radio telephone, a navigational telex receiver and a satellite communication system.All material, equipment, machinery, piping and workmanship for the building of this Vessel has been used complying to the highest standards of Shipbuilding practice.

The Vessel is dual classed by Lloyds Register of Shipping and Indian Register of Shipping and also meets all IMO rules and regulations.-Global Maritime Brevik (formerly GL Noble Denton) designed this state of the art hull form using computational fluid dynamics software and model tank tests held in Vienna Model Test Basin. The hull form minimizes resistance through the water and improves the wake and a fin stabilizer decreases the rolling effect.

This Vessel marks the beginning of a new era in Passenger transpor-tation in India and it will be of great importance to both the tourism and business sectors. After the delivery, MV Corals casts and sets sail for India. This vessel will replace the ageing Passenger fleet that is in operation at present.The MV Coral’s identical sister ship, MV Lagoons is presently under construction and will be delivered towards end of 2014.

BERNHARDSCHULTE SHIPMANAGEMENT (CYPRUS) CO. LTD., managed product carrier was MT. Intrepid Republic (GRT: 16437, LOA: 145.15 M, Beam: 23.00 M) called in for drydock repairs during the 3rd week of June 2014. Given the strategic geographical location of Colombo Dockyard, it was the best option for the owners/ managers to carry out the leaking seal related repairs and other drydocking repairs. Special care was taken to plan out the drydocking window, this was a unique case where the MT. Intrepid Republic schedule was changing continuously due to discharging / berthing delays at the last port in the Indian coast. Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement has entered into a frame agree-ment with Colombo Dockyard for repair of their fleet of vessels operat-ing globally. Colombo’s dynamism and uniqueness as against the other shipyards were evident and appreciated by the managers/ Owners, when the shipyard professionally managed to adjust the drydocking window to meet with the arrival schedule of the vessel. (After many changes to her arrival date). During this drydocking call the work package covered repairs in all sectors; The main job scope involved renewal of all Sea Suction & O'board valves, Aux & Exhaust boiler cleaning and overhauling of mountings. Main Engine Air cooler cleaning and testing. Tailshaft inner seal vulcanize and outer seal overhaul at workshop without removing

The project team was headed by Ship Manager Mr. Jayanath Fernan-do who was well supported by all production departments in redeliver-ing this project. Shipyard mustered all resources and a collective approach helped to catch up on the slipped-up schedule, to provide a satisfactory final output to the total project. The team members who were instrumental in providing necessary leadership for smooth execution of the project.

This has been his first experience with Colombo Dockyard, a brief interview giving his feedback is given below. How was the response to your inquiry handled, the response speed and effectiveness and meeting your requirement? Very good, within a day of initial request, I was offered an initial slot.

The flexibility of Colombo Dockyard to handle your specific requirement? How convenient was the project accommodated, scheduling etc. My vessel’s arrival was delayed by 5 days due last port congestion, however Colombo Dockyard held by slot open allowing me to dock on arrival.

Quality of workmanship and speed of the repairs. Very good, All repairs completed to my entire satisfaction within the allotted time.

Colombo's infrastructure capability as a full service shipyard - your comments? The infrastructure of Colombo is as good if not better than several competitors at least for my project.

Logistics / speed and services - your comments. Excellent, spares arrived airport at 23.00 on Saturday, delivered 10.00 Sunday to shipyard.

Other support services for Ship repairs - your comments. All support services which were needed were readily available.

Ryoji Hayashi, accompanied by Lcdr Hitoshi Wako of the Counter Piracy Measures Office of International Criminal Investigation Division, Guard and Rescue Department of the Japan Coast Guard paid a courtesy call on Colombo Dockyard PLC on 6th June 2014. This visit was a precursor to the arrival of Japanese Coast Guard Ship YASHIMA to Sri Lanka.The visit approved by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development was facilitated by Sri Lanka Coast Guard and Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka. Mr. Mototsugu Shigekawa Defence/Security Attache of the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka and Ltcdr PT Koswattage of Sri Lanka Coast Guard also participated in the visit.The delegation was met by Mr. Akihiko Nakauchi (Chairman), Mr. Ranil Wijegunawardena (MD/CEO),Mr. Y. Kijima (Director) and Mr. Prince Lye

(Head of Marketing, NB) and a high level discussion ensued giving details of ‘state of the art’ Shipbuild-ing, Ship repair and maintenance facilities available at Colombo Dockyard, which can be utilized in case of any emergency situations onboard vessels when plying in the Indian ocean.After a detailed tour of the Shipyard, the Japanese Coast Guard delegation expressed their fullest satisfaction of the dry dock and workshop facilities available in Colombo, which can cater to any type of repair need. Availability of world class repair facilities at Colombo Dockyard has fortified Colombo’s position as a regional hub port. Colombo Dockyard is one of the success stories of Japanese collaboration in Sri Lanka where we have been able to blend Japanese technological know how with the skill and competence of a fully Sri Lankan workforce.

Jal Vahini (GRT: 7078, LOA: 134.50 M, Beam: 18.80 M) called in for her drydock repairs during the last week of April 2014. The Colombo Dockyard was the best option for the owners/ managers given the strategic geographic location, with minimal diversion from her trading routes. Special care was taken to plan out the drydocking window avoiding the slack period, in order the owners will get the best productive slots scheduling the vessel avoiding local holiday periods in consultation with the owners / managers. During this call the owners carried out routine drydocking along with major repairs to the cranes with attendance of the Chinese crane manufacturers overlooking the precision repairs. The project team was headed by Ship Manager Mr. Jayanath Fernan-do – who was well supported by all production departments in redeliv-ering this project. Shipyard mustered all resources and a collective approach helped to complete the project on schedule. Successful delivery of this project marked a significant milestone Colombo Dockyard’s client portfolio in serving one of the key fleet owners in the globally /region as owners Global United India operates with the blessings of the shipping giant Global Synergy Group. The owner’s interests were looked after by Mr. Joseph Peter E – Technical superintendent during this drydocking call. PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL LINES (PIL), LOOKS TO COLOMBO AS A REPAIR HUB FOR THEIR VESSELS OPERATING IN THE REGION

PIL has placed confidence in Colombo as the repair hub for the vessels trading in this region. Operated from PIL,Singapore, Selandia Ship Management, Singapore and PIL, UK the vessels that have patronised Colombo. The PIL vessels that have called Colombo over the recent months are MV. Kota Halus, MV. Kota Handal, MV. Kota Arif, MV. Kota Hakim MV. Kota Anggun and Mr. Kota Hormat. PIL, UK owned container carrier Kota Hakim (Dwt 18,830) called in for her special survey repairs during latter part of June 2014. The repairs were completed within successfully meeting owner’s/ Manager’s requirements. Colombo was the best option for the owners/ managers given the strate-gic location placing the vessel on the trading route, the vessel discharged her containers in Colombo and shifted to yard berth and shifted into drydocks for her repairs. During this drydocking call the work package covered repairs in all sectors; blasting painting, steel renewals, piping repairs, hatch cover resting pads and other routine drydocking related repairs.The owner’s interests were looked after by Mr. Mohamed Hoque – Fleet Manager. The yard team was headed by Ship Manager Mr. Priyanka Cooray – who was well supported by all produc-tion departments to re-deliver the vessel ahead of schedule. The owners were happy with the

excellent facilities at their disposal coupled with the quality workmanship, professional approach to meet the owners requirements were highly appreciated. The container carrier was accom-modated in the 125,000 DWT drydock for her repair requirements and sailed out direct from the drydocks. The repairs were carried out meeting the Class NKK classification society require-ments. Eastern Maritime Ltd.(Colombo) Ltd., handled the local husbanding work smoothly.

Hill Robinson International Inc. USA, managed expedition motor yacht calls Colombo for her repair requirements during end May 2014.

This 58 Meter expedition Motor Yacht designed and built in 1999 by Halter Marine as Samantha Lyn. significant refit in 2008, called in for afloat repairs requirements after her crusing assignments in the Maldives.

Colombo Dockyard facilities has been utilised by many international operators, this has been a good project that has been successfully completed meeting owners and class requirements.Colombo Dockyard has been aggressively marketing its repair services for this specialised sector, with specialist assistance of Mr. Duncan McGregor, Eclipse Yachts Thailand, who was instrumental in coordinating this project. After completing her repairs in Colombo she has shifted to Galle for further layup, vessel will return back to her cursing duties in either Maldives or Seychelles.

The owner’s interests were looked after by Capt. Ferdi Heymann. The yard team was headed by Mr. Ajith Kariyapperuma Ship Manager who was well supported by all production departments to re-deliver the vessel on schedule. Invoicing and specialized service arrangements were handled by Estimating & Invoicing Engineer Mr. Athapattu. The owners were happy with the excellent facilities at their disposal coupled with the quality workmanship, professional approach to meet the owners requirements were highly appreciated. High net-worth luxury yacht repair sector prospects look promising, with many of the yacht operators terminating their cruises close to Maldives in the Indian Ocean, reverting to repair- maintenance soon after a charter. Mclearence Shipping Ltd., handled the local husbanding work smoothly. Colombo has already emerged as a marine hub for commercial container traffic; the successful completion of this luxury yacht projects and marketing of the services to this un-tapped sector looks promising for the future.

The maritime industry in Sri Lanka has seen rejuvenated activity with the government of Sri Lanka implementing infrastructure development projects to cater to the leisure industry, specifically in Galle and in the longer term with the Colombo port city with a yacht marina on the cards, should attract the big players.

The historical Kandy Esala Procession and festival is a revered event in the Buddhist calendar organized by Sri Dalada Maligawa-Kandy. The procession takes place on 10 consecutive nights, where the first six nights are known as Kumbalperahera and the last four nights are more glamorous Randoliperahera with the final night having a 100 elephants adorned in elegant costumes parading the Streets.
