Brand Owner Expectations
Brand owners expect
perfect preforms and bottles
without surface damage
but…
They are not willing to pay
much extra for it!
This means that extra cost
for preform surface quality
is difficult to absorb by the
converters – Cost is King!
Origins of Surface Damage
Surface scratches/scuffs from preform handling & transport
Preform ISBM Preform stretch factor from
preform to bottle:
~ 3x height
~ 3x width
Surface scratches, scuffs
& marks get enlarged with
the same factor
Main contributor:
High Coefficient of Friction
(CoF) of fresh preforms
Why would you use a slip agent? In case of PET preforms:
• To lower coefficient of friction on the preform surface
• Reduce scratches, improving final product appearance
• Assists in efficient packing of preforms in transport containers

DiscolorationDiscoloration (or the absence of
it) of PET is an important factor for
additives
In first use
In post-consumer recycling
applications
Chemically unstable
additives will degrade and
cause discoloration during
processing and
re-processing (recycling)

Premium Appearance
Scratch free bottles are perceived as premium packaging
No occurrence of black specks; due to absence of deposit formation on extruder screws and hot runners
No yellowing
Value
Customer Value
Cost - effectiveness
Cost-effectiveness; usage level ~50% lower than any other commercially available slip agent
Process; no influence on preform moulding cycle time and no screw slip effect
More efficient octabin filling; The slip property allows for more efficient filling of octabins (~10% more preforms).

Process & Properties
Material properties; unchanged at normal usage levels
No IV-loss
No chemical interaction with PET

Regulatory Compliance HolcoSlip 271-Series is designed and
manufactured for food contact applications in PET packaging only
EU 10/2011, confirmed by EFSA: no restrictions - no specific migration limit (SML)
Passed EU 10/2011 migration tests forOverall Migration Limit (OML), below detection limit
FDA compliance; migration & testing work finalised, dossier in final stage of acceptance - expected late 2015
Product & Handling
Product; low viscous liquid
Easy dosing; ‘drop in’ solution on any drum-based liquid dosing set-up
Holland Colours provides gravimetric liquid dosing systems – “What you Set is what you Get”
Economic AdvantageBasic advantages:
Lower dosing for same slip effect (vs competition)
More preforms in octabin (vs no slip additive used)
Calculation example
Assumptions:
Husky HyPETTM 300 with 72 cavities
Producing 242 million preforms per year of ~25
gram = 6,000 tonnes PET (96% uptime and 24/7
production)
lower dosing: 0.08% vs. 0.13% is a saving of 3,000 kgs of slip additive per year
10% higher octabin filling rate; instead of 20,000 in one octabin now filling up to 22,000 = a saving of 1,800 octabins per annum on internal and external transport movements
