Objectives

● Idea of business continuity planning – BCP● Relationship between BCP and DRP● BCP implementation as per need● Execution of DRP and BCP

Business Continuity Planning

● The Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning domain addresses the preservation of the business in the face of major disruptions to normal business operations.

● BCP and DRP involve the – preparation, testing and updating of specific

actions– to protect critical business processes from the

effect of major system and network failures.

Business Continuity Planning

● Business continuity planning (BCP) addresses – the preservation and – recovery of business – in the event of outages to normal business

operations.● BCP counteracts

– interruptions to business activities and – should be available to protect critical business

processes from the effects of major failures or disasters.

Business Impact Analysis

● Business impact analysis (BIA) is the process of determining impacts of an IT service disruption to business operations in terms of financial loss.

● BIA is a part of BCP.

Disaster Recovery Plans

● Disaster recovery planning (DRP) addresses the recovery of a damaged facility or components back to normal business operations.

● Disaster recovery plan is a set of procedures that enables an organization to:

– Respond to disaster in accordance to a pre-defined disaster level.

– Assess damage & estimate time required to resume operations.

– Perform salvage & repair.

Process for Creating a BCP

● Phase I: Project Initiation● Phase II: Business Impact Analysis (BIA)● Phase III: Recovery Strategy● Phase IV: Plan Design & Development● Phase V: Implementation● Phase VI: Testing● Phase VII: Maintenance, Awareness, and Training

Systems Engineering Approach for Creating a BCP

● Understand the BCP needs– Phase I: Project Initiation

● Define the BCP requirements– Phase II: Business Impact Analysis

● Design the BCP– Phase III: Recovery Strategy

● Develop the BCP– Phase IV: Plan Design &

● Phase VI: Testing

● Support BCP– Phase VII: Maintenance

● Assess BCP effectiveness– Phase VI: Testing

BCP Domains● Cyber incident response plan ● Disaster recovery planning● Recovery of a damaged facility or components● Occupant emergency plan (OEP)

Page 11: 009.itsecurity bcp v1

BCP Domains● Occupant emergency plan (OEP)

– provides the response procedures for occupants of a facility in the event of a situation

– posing a potential threat to the health and safety of personnel, the environment, or property.

BCP in Action● Equipment failure (such as disk crash).● Disruption of power supply or telecommunication.● Application failure or corruption of database.● Human error, sabotage or strike.● Malicious Software (Viruses, Worms, Trojan horses) attack.● Hacking or other Internet attacks.● Social unrest or terrorist attacks● Natural Disaster● Evernenal degradation (Heat, Fire, water etc)

DRP : Recovery Sites

● Hot Site● Warm Site● Cold Site● Mirror Site or Multiple Processing Centers● Mobile Site

Page 16: 009.itsecurity bcp v1

DRP : Data Recovery

● Full volume backup ● Differential backup ● Incremental backup

Site Switchover

● Understand the severity of “disaster”● Coordinate the BCP (/ crisis) team● Execute the BCP according to the “disaster” ● Communicate the crisis● Secure the primary site

Page 19: 009.itsecurity bcp v1

Return to Home

● Reactivate physical perimeter security systems (fire, IDS, water, etc.)

● Implement and test the IT infrastructure. (i.e. networks, DNS, e-mail, etc.)

● Certify the system is ready for operations.
