The youth in City of God are

uneducated. They do not get a

chance to go to school and

learn basic skills like reading

and writing. The youth culture is also

extremely violent. But the

young people seem to except

it. Like it, even. Maybe because

it makes them feel powerful

and power is everything in the

slums. The youth are definitely

influenced by the older

generations, they look up to

people like Lil Ze and Carrot.

The last scene the Little Runts

are discussing who to kill next.

The ‘leader’ suggests that they

make a black list and asks who

can write and only one of them

says they can…kind of. The youth seem to be unfazed by

violence for example, when Lil Ze

shoots everyone at the hotel. He

shows no remorse. He even

laughs as he does it. However,

when Steak ‘n’ chips is forced to

shoot one of the runts he does

show remorse. But he does it

over fear of being killed himself.

The lack of education

over there is not what

we expect to see. We

see Brazil as being a rich

country. We rarely ever

see the slums, so it comes as a shock to us.

Therefore their lack of

basic skills such as reading and writing is

also very unusual to us.

ages.

Young people’s lives are set out for

them. They are either going to die or

be trapped in the slums forever. There

is not much hope for any of them.

In the slums the only way to get

power is through drugs and who

doesn’t want power? Therefore youths

will almost certainly become part of

the drug trade. They are trapped in the place they

consider ‘home’ this is not nice.

Youths are forced into the life of

drugs, crime and violence.

They have no good role models, we

see no parents, grandparents or

siblings. There is only people like Lil

Ze and Carrot to look up to.
