How it all began
Iqbal was born in South Asia and sold into slavery at the age of four. In his short life, he had spent six years chained to a carpet-weaving loom before making an incredible escape. Iqbal captured the world’s attention by speaking out for children’s rights. Eventually, Iqbal’s wide media coverage caught the attention of those who wished to silence him. At 12, Iqbal lost his life for defending the rights of children.
A boy, a newspaper and some shameless idealism. As 12-year-old Craig flipped through the Toronto Star in search of the comics, he was struck by a story; A tragic, but courageous story of a boy his age named Iqbal Masih.
How it all beganWhat Craig learned from Iqbal’s story was that the bravest voice can live in even the smallest body.
He also knew he had to help. Craig gathered together a small group of his Grade 7 classmates from his Thornhill, Ontario, school and Free The Children was born.
Free children from poverty.
Free children from exploitation.
Free children from the notion that they are powerless to
affect change.
These were the messages that fuelled Craig’s mission. The idea was a good one – and it caught on.
Today, Free The Children is the world’s largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million youth involved in our innovative education and development programs in 45 countries.
How it all began
What does FTC do?In Canada, the US, and the UK: FTC educates, engages and empowers youth in North America, the UK and around the world with the tools, knowledge, confidence and support network to be ambassadors for change and lead meaningful action.
In Africa, Asia and Latin America: FTC works together with communities to establish a comprehensive, child- focused development approach that gives all community members the education, skills and opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty—forever.

adopt a villageIt’s not charity. It’s sustainability.
Our holistic and sustainable development model
To eliminate the obstacles preventing children from accessing education and to break the cycle to povertyGoal:
adopt a village
Our holistic and sustainable development model
how:
adopt a villageThrough sustainable development within communities from the Five Core Pillars
EducationEducation
Imp
act
Schools and school rooms built, allowing for the education of
55,000 children everyday.
FTC not only builds schools and provides materials for classroom learning, but they partner with the Ministry of Education to ensure their projects are maintained over the long-term, to create programming and initiatives to complement gov’t-determined curriculum, and to commit to providing all students with a quality education.
HEALTHCAREHEALTHCARE
Worth of medical supplies shipped around
the world
Impact
FTC works to have their health pillar as effective, sustainable and cost-effective as possible. Working closely with the government in many ways to align FTC health care practices with the government’s national priorities, and in most cases, partner with the government to administer health care in communities where FTC works. Their programs generally focus on health education and preventative care, allowing children to remain healthy and able to go to school.
WaterWater

People provided with clean water, health care and sanitation
FTC’s clean water initiatives provide communities with clean water sources and sanitation facilities, reducing the spread of waterborne diseases. These initiatives also rid children of their daily treks to collect water, freeing them to attend school. The clean water and sanitation projects include the construction of wells, rain catchment systems, hand-washing stations and latrines.
Clean water isn’t a luxury – it’s a basic human right.
Alternative IncomeAlternative Income
Women with economic self-sufficiency
Impact
FTC provides communities, mainly women, with resources to generate a sustainable source of income, increase their savings and even start their own businesses. These resources include sewing machines, farming supplies, animals for breeding and milking, financial literacy workshops, micro-credit loans, business training sessions and women’s support groups. This support gives parents the necessary education, tools and skills they need to sustain incomes and break the cycle of poverty.
Agriculture and Food Agriculture and Food SafetySafety
One of the most pressing issues contributing to poverty today is the lack of food security. FTC partnered up with PotashCrop last month to address this issue. By implementing initiatives such as crop diversification, tree-planting, farms, gardens, irrigation and watershed building, FTC provides solutions to food security. These initiatives will also support school nutrition programs and ensure access to a safe and sustainable source of nutritious food for communities on an ongoing basis.
Our holistic and sustainable development model
adopt a village
We focus not on one facet of development – water, health etc. We focus on what communities really need: a holistic solution to ending poverty.
It’s not charity. It’s sustainability. We do not give handouts; we do not merely give a home or a pair of shoes or other personal items. Instead, we seek the greatest benefit through investing in the community infrastructure.
