Breathing
Learning Objectives: To understand the role of the respiratory
system in humans. To know how breathing links to cellular
respiration. To visualise how the lungs work using a model.
Feel yourself breathing
Sit still and close your eyes Concentrate on what happens as you breathe
in and out. Focus on how your chest expands and relaxes. Think about what parts of your body are
moving.
The Respiratory System
Ribs – to protect the chest
Bronchioles
Bronchi Trachea – has stiff rings of cartilage to prevent it collapsingRib muscles –
to raise and lower the ribs
Lung
Diaphragm – muscular sheet
Alveoli (“air sacs”) – gas
exchange takes place here
Why are these so different?
