Spencer Jones, KKC/CapstoneProduction Intern Fall 2014 / Spring 2015

Interning at WYCC has shaped my career path in ways that I wasn't expecting. The station showed me how to lay the foundation to build off of, and to use a platform that I'm passionate about to connect to my viewers. I felt like they wanted me there and wanted to help me to better myself. I can honestly say that the people who helped me are the reason I'm where I am now.

I was more than a person there to go get coffee and donuts. To them I was someonewho had a valuable input that couldaidein bridging the gap between generations.

KKC SHADOWS

10

The Shadow Program is REQUIRED by all KKC students taking Television Studio Production I. Each student is required to complete 10 hours of shadow time with our professionals and counts for 20% of their grade. The Shadow Program is a major component in helping students interact with the staff at WYCC PBS Chicago. They see first-hand what it takes to pull off a production and the number of people in collaboration in this effort! It opens up many eyes and propels students to complete more than just the 10 hours of shadow time required.

ACCESS

14

The various productions at WYCC have exposed our interns to professionals in the areas of government, radio, television and the arts!

15

My internship at WYCC was my first internship as a production assistant and one I learned a lot from. I was an intern right when the show In The Loop was in its beginning stages and I was able to be very hands on in the studio. I quickly learned the dynamics of putting a show together with learning how everyone's roll played a huge part in a successful show. Every day I was assigned different tasks, from trying to find a next guest for the show to transcribing and making sure everything was ready on set for the show.Joanna Hernandez Columbia CollegeProduction Intern, Spring Intern 2013

The WYCC Production Internship Program allows interns to practice their technical skill-set in their particular field of interest. The WYCC team provides endless support and incredible advice. This support lead me to a couple of freelance media projects; the chance to volunteer at the Midwest Emmy ceremony in 2016; and the landing of a Traffic & Weather Producer and Reporter position for a major, reputable company.Words alone can display my appreciation for the WYCC team and their gracious support. They truly care for their interns and have immense knowledge and appreciation for the broadcasting field.Adrienne Jones, Illinois Media SchoolProduction Intern, Summer 2016

We were encouraged to think critically, voice our opinions, and provide input on the projects that we were assigned; we sat in on production meetings to learn the details of concept inception arced through to production completion; and we assisted with several different functions throughout the pre- and post-production process. There was never a dull moment!

WYCCs Production Supervisor of Student Programs created the first-ever event designed to expose interns and KKC media students to the wider world of production.

The event wasre-launchedinthe 2014 Summer semester and it was met with great enthusiasm! The tourshelped our students imagine their place in the larger landscape of production in Chicago!

Following my internship, I graduated from college and less than a month later took my first position as a news reporter. I have no doubt that had I not interned at WYCC PBS, I would not have had the skills and experience to obtain the first job in my career. I am very thankful for the time I spent at WYCC PBS, and I'll continue to encourage other communications or digital media students to apply and do the same.
