DESCRIPTION

It is difficult to imagine a lesson without a text, either written or audio. We extensively use dialogues, articles, stories, poems and many other forms of text. The most common tasks for reading or listening remain comprehension questions, which become familiar to students, yet a bit boring too. In this seminar we are going to look at the text from a different angle and explore various approaches of working with this valuable lesson material.

It is a story about Sen no Rikyu, who was a famous tea master holding inspiring tea ceremonies in 16th century in Japan, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a warlord, very important in Japanese history. Sen no Rikyu was a very spiritual man who believed in simple, natural things. So when he did the tea ceremonies, for instance, he would carefully choose tea bowls and pots and so on which were still beautiful, but also very simple. One day Hideyoshi, the warlord, was riding past Rikyu's house when suddenly he noticed that the garden was full of fantastic morning glory flowers. It was such a wonderful sight that he stopped and he asked Rikyu to hold a tea ceremony for him there the next day, and of course, Rikyu agreed reluctantly. The reason for his reluctance could be explained. They were totally different people – one was a thoughtful, quiet man and the other was a rich, powerful soldier who'd been fighting all his life. But Rikyu didn't have a lot of choice. The next day Hideyoshi was getting ready for the visit anticipating that he would relax among those lovely flowers having delicious tea. However, when Hideyoshiarrived at the tea house as they'd agreed, he saw that Rikyu had deliberately cut down all the flowers! Not one flower was left in the garden. Hideyoshi was furious. He'd been expecting to see this amazing garden again but instead he found all the flowers completely destroyed. So he rushed into the tea house... but when he got inside, Rikyu was just sitting there calmly, waiting to make tea for him. Behind Rikyu, he saw a simple brown pot... and in the pot was one absolutely perfect morning glory flower. And when Hideyoshi saw it, he immediately understood why Rikyu had cut down the flowers.

A message from the story:

People have different ideas about beauty. Rikyu was saying that a simple thing has the greatest beauty and that one perfect thing is enough and all the rest is just detail.
