Women’s History – March 2011The databases highlighted below contain resources, including primary sources/documents, which provide information on Women’s History, Equal Rights, and the Suffragist Movement. Along with reference content, some of the online databases listed below include lesson plans, multimedia files (photographs, videos, charts/graphs), activities, worksheets, and answer keys. Contact your library media specialist for username and password. Enter the search term “women’s history” and click on the link Women’s Rights Movements to read an article on the history of the women’s suffrage movement. Click on the Multimedia link on the right to see a picture of the Women’s Trade Union League Convention held in 1917 and to read about the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire in 1911, in which almost 146 young women perished.

Click on the link for the American Women’s History Online database. Select the African American History Online database. Click on the Images and Videos link and select the file “Film Offers Pointers to Marketers on How to Sell to Housewives in 1950s Film” to see a video discussing how manufacturers and other companies marketed to housewives in the 1950s.

Enter the search term “Women’s History”. Click on the Multimedia tab and choose the link Women’s Exhibit at Chrysler Museum Celebrates Women’s History Month to see a television broadcast video of an art exhibit celebrating Women’s history. Then click on the link A Look Back at Women’s Studies Since the 1970s to hear an NPR radio broadcast discussing the contributions of women throughout history.

Click on the Spotlight on Women’s History Month link at the bottom of the page. Students can take the “Spotlight Quiz” on women in high level positions of the government. Click on the View More link and then on the Primary Sources link to read the article “Nellie Taylor Ross Takes Oath as First Woman Governor” by the United Press International. Ross became the governor of Wyoming after

Women’s History – March 2011the death of her husband. She was the first female governor in the United States.

Enter search term “Women’s Rights.” Click on the link entitled Tables on the left of the page. Click on the link Historical Documents in the National Archives, and scroll down to “19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: Women’s Right to Vote.” Click on the link Constitution of the United States, and scroll down to the section “Amendment 19: Woman Suffrage” to see a picture of the actual resolution introduced in Congress to propose the amendment.
