CHRISTMAS TREE

Christmas trees can be either natural,

mostly firs, either artificial.

The Christmas tree constitutes today an

international Christmas custom.

The decoration of the tree is purely

symbolic of the happiness of the people

because of the Birth of Christ.

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR’S CAROLS

Greek Christmas

Carols:

Καλήν εσπέραν άρτοντες,

αν είναι ορισμός σας,

Χριστού τη Θεία γέννηση,

να πω στ' αρτοντικό σας.

Χριστός γεννάται σήμερον,

εν Βηθλεέμ τη πόλει,

οι οσρανοί αγάλλονται,

ταίρει η υύσις όλη.

On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve,

children of all ages are in the streets

singing Carols with their triangles.; As a

treat they usually get some candies or

money!

TURKEY AND TRADITIONAL SWEETSOn Christmas evening the whole family eats the

traditional Christmas dish, the turkey.

Also, throughout the Christmas period we eat

sweets like melomakarona, kourabiedes and

diples.

NEW YEAR’S CAKE - VASILOPITA

Vasilopita is the cake prepared in some countries

by the Christians on New Year's Eve and curved

shortly after the change of the year.

The New Year’s cake which is made primarily of

flour, eggs, sugar and milk, is shaped in various

sizes and species but it is usually fluffy and sweet.

Inside the cake there is a coin which brings luck to

the person who finds it in his own slice.

SANTA CLAUS

Santa Claus is the old man who

delivers gifts to children and adults

who have been "good" during the

year.

The familiar figure of a red

costume, white beard, glasses,

always smiling with the sack of gifts

on a sleigh pulled by reindeer is

worldwide the most favorite hero of

children these days of festivities.

THE POMEGRANATE

The pomegranate is a symbol of

abundance, fertility and good luck.

After the Holy Mass on the first day of

the Year they throw a pomegranate at

the threshold of the house so that it

breaks into a thousand pieces and

they say: “Happy new year”!!

THEOFANIA– HOLY WATER

On the 6th of January it is the day of Theofania. On that day after the

Holy Mass the priest throws the Holy Cross in the water so that the

water becomes Holy. This takes place by the sea or a river or in a

pool. The person who dives and finds the Holy Cross is considered

to be a blessed Christian.
