WIND

What is the Wind Turbines?
A wind turbine is a rotating machine which
converts the kinetic energy in wind into
mechanical energy. The mechanical energy can
be converted into electrical energy, or it can be
used to pump water or grind crops. If it is used to
make electricity, it can be called a wind turbine,
but if it is used to grind or pump, it is called a
windmill.
Schematic Diagram Wind
Turbine
How do the work ?
A wind turbine converts the wind’s kinetic
energy into electrical energy.
It comprises the following elements:
1. A tower, about 80 to 90
meters high, in order to
harness stronger winds
at a higher altitude.
How do the work ?
2. A nacelle, which
turns to orient the
machine in the optimal
direction.
3. It houses the main
components of the
wind turbine.
How do the work ?
4. And a 3-bladed
rotor which can
measure 100
meters or more in
diameter such as
the Halide 150 with
its
150-metre diameter
rotor.
How do the work ?
5. When the wind blows, the blades spin the rotor which in turn rotates the shaft fitted to the nacelle.
6. This driveshaft is connected to a generator. This rotational energy will enable the production of electricity.
How do the work ?
7. Subsequently, a transformer located inside the nacelle or tower rises the current voltage.
8. This allows it to be transported more efficiently via the electrical grid power lines.
How do the work ?
9. In order to function
a wind turbine needs
a minimum wind
speed of 10 to 15 kph
& for safety reasons, a
wind turbine will
automatically stop
when wind speed
exceeds 90 kph.
How do the work ?
10. The power provided by a wind turbine
increases exponentially to wind speed.
11. Winds of 30 kph are 8 times more productive
than winds of 15 kph.
12. Hence the location of the wind turbine is key.
To harness the wind in the best possible way,
equipment is integrated into the nacelle to
continually measure the wind speed and direction.
How do the work ?
13. This enables the
wind turbine to be
optimally oriented into
the wind and to modify
the rotor blade angle.
14. There are two
main categories of
wind turbines:
onshore & offshore
How do the work ?
15. OFFSHORE: The
installation of offshore
wind turbines, usually
installed some 10 kms
or more off the coast,
at a seabed depth of
25 to 30 meters , is
more costly.
How do the work ?
16. The foundation and
tower must be able to
withstand the force of
the waves & connection
to the electrical grid
means laying
underwater cables.
17. On the other hand,
more regular winds
enable the generation of
typically 6MW of
electricity compared to
2 to 3 MW for onshore
How do the work ?
18. Modern wind
turbines operate with
an efficiency in the
range of 20% to 50%.
19. This is an
excellent level of
efficiency, since the
“Fuel” of a wind
turbine is free.
Advantage of Wind Turbine
1. Wind energy is friendly to the surrounding environment, as no fossil fuels are burnt to generate electricity form wind energy.
2. Wind turbines take up less space than the average power station.
3. Newer technologies are making the extraction of wind energy much more efficient.
4. Wind turbines are a great resource to generate energy in remote locations, such as mountain communities and remote countryside.
5. When combined with solar electricity, this energy source is great for developed and developing countries to provide a steady, reliable supply of electricity.
6. Birds face many hazards but wind turbines only cause 0.01% of bird fatalities
Disadvantage of Wind
Turbine
1. The main disadvantage regarding wind power is down
to the winds unreliability factor.
2. Wind turbines generally produce allot less electricity
than the average fossil fuelled power station.
3. Wind turbine construction can be very expensive and
costly to surrounding wildlife during the build process.
4. The noise pollution from commercial wind turbines is
sometimes similar to a small jet engine.
5. This is fine if you live miles away, where you will hardly
notice the noise, but what if you live within a few
hundred meters of a turbine
6. This is big Disadvantage of wind collisions with
buildings cause 58% of fatalities!
Wind Turbine Compare of Solar
Panel
We have harnessed wind for thousands of years:
1. Transport 2. Agriculture 3. Power
Wind turbine blades rotate at 15-20 rpm generating electricity
Providing power to the national grid-----powering local homes and businesses
A wind turbine uses less than 1 acre of land 1 substation 1 crane pad
The land can still be farmed right up to the turbine base.
Wind turbines spin 70-80% of the time
The UK is the windiest county in Europe—receiving 40% of wind…The UK has 1 turbine per 100 km2
Germany has 7
Denmark has 11

Companies can benefit from Wind Power
• Reduced energy costs
• Long-term energy price security
• Materially reduced carbon footprint
At present in UK 7 in 10 people support wind power, rising to 79% aged 18-44 & 88% of scots want a future based on renewables.
