This North American rodents lives in larger

communities called towns.

Their burrows have defined nurseries, sleeping

listening posts near exits, so animals can safely

keep tabs on the movements of predators outside. Chambers located at different depths in the soil

serve different purposes.

The nursery, for example, is located deep in the

soil where the temperature is more stable and

young ones are better protected from predators.

The largest recorded town in Texas, covered

65,000 KM² and was home to an estimated 400

million of them.

and has changed very little over the last 250 million years.

Its blood is a distinctive blue colour thanks to the fact that it contains

Y-rich haemocyanin as opposed to iron-rich haemoglobin.

A protein in the blood called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) is

used by pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers to test

their products for the presence of endotoxins, bacterial substances

that can cause fevers and even be fatal to humans.

The LAL test is one of the most important medical products derived from a marine organism to benefit humans.
