White is the color that was defined assuperior, intelligent, and worthy of life whendeciphering the standards of nativism inAmerica.I will illustrate how nativism played a key role in the shaping of Americathrough religion, race, and eugenics 3. ELLIS ISLANDAlthough the millions ofimmigrants that camethrough Ellis Island wherewhite, such as the Irish, theywere not accepted as thenorm from the Americansthat began to call themselvesnatives.The majority of Irishimmigrants where Catholic.The natives were Protestantand to them, no otherreligion was accepted. 4. Fear of CatholicsAccording to John Jay, ChiefJustice of New York,Catholics were a threat toAmerica. He claimed thatCatholics could not hold theirallegiance to the King and beloyal to America 5. The Orphan TrainThe Orphan Train has had ahuge impact on the lack ofbeing able to locate familymembers and is alsoconsidered a form ofnativism. 7. The most inhumane form of nativism, in myopinion, is eugenics. Eugenics is the science of improving a human population bycontrolled breeding. Eugenicist, Harry Laughlin, first raised the idea to the Americangovernment that this technique would only benefit the Americansociety by eliminating feeble-minded people. Laughlin isresponsible for the Model Sterilization Act of 1914. 8. Eugenicists,Henry PerkinsAnother eugenicists whothought he could wipe out anentire race because theywere not white, norProtestant in the state ofVermont, and succeeded. 9. Here is a picture of one of the hundreds of Indian schools inthe United States. 10. Paul Lombardo Paul Lombardo is a professor at Georgia StateUniversity in the Center of Law, Health, & Society.He has written books on eugenics and its effect onthe human race.
