What is the history of the settlement?
• Overcrowding is a major problem in Rio's favelas. On average, the population density is about 37,000 people per square kilometre. Because of the lack of toilets and poor sanitation, sewage often runs in open drains. This causes diseases which spread rapidly.

What are the opportunities of living in Rochina?
• There are few jobs in Rochina as it is a poor favela. Some jobs are: tour guides showing people around the favela, also barbers and local shop workers.
• Most people don’t have jobs, this means they do not get paid so that’s why they are really poor.

What are the challenges of living there?• Jobs are rare here in Rochina as there are 100,000
people who live there so there is a competition for jobs.
• The drains in the favelas are open and kids walk through it, this makes it unhygienic. The residents who live there get ill very easily because of this.
