The Camera

• Our production was filmed on a Sony A57 (picture shown below)• We decided to use this camera instead of the school cameras because

the quality was better and we could control the settings on the camera more easily.

• The camera also had a flip out screen, therefore we could line up very high angle shots and still see what we were doing.

• I learnt how to navigate my way around this camera. How to focus it, how to change the aperture to let the right amount of light into the camera. Therefore we could experiment with how shots would look.

• I think I’ve learnt to use the camera well, however I should have taken more of a hands on approach to using it, to get more experience with how it works.

Steady Camera

• At points of filming we had to keep the camera steady. • The tripod was the most useful piece of equipment we used to

keep the camera steady. The tripod had a ball where the camera was, which meant we could tilt the camera and film, but still keep it steady.

• However we did not use the tripod all the time. When we wanted to create shaky, disorientated shots we held the camera manually, therefore the movement of our bodies created camera shake.

• Here is an example picture of us using the tripod to keep the camera steady.I think we used the tripod efficiently and effectively, we

only used it when needed and when we did use it created the desired effect .

Microphone

1) We used a Microphone and boom to record sound.

2) The mic is plugged into the left of the camera where the jack fits.

3) The mic is then connected to that lead and is optionally connected to the boom pole.

4) If you connect the mic to the boom pole you can stand further off camera and get the mic closer to the source of the sound. In the picture shown above we did not use the boom pole because it was not needed to record as much sound.

5) At one point we recorded some sound through the floor. Therefore the sound was slightly muffled creating the effect that the sound was from a different room. We learnt that the recording would sound different depending on where the sound is recorded from.

On evaluation I think we used the Microphone professionally and used it to it’s full potential.

Lighting

• We learnt the effect of different lighting.• Our sequence is a horror, therefore we decided that dark

lighting would be the most appropriate. It makes the atmosphere feel gloomy and unwelcoming. Therefore this haunted house would not appeal to the audience , this helps them identify with the characters’ fear. Personally I believe the lighting choice successfully conveyed what we wanted.

• If the lighting was bright then the house would seem too welcoming and safe.

Premiere Pro

These are all of the shots we filmed, they’re all named appropriately, therefore it’s easy to find the clip we want.

These are where all the video and audio files are placed, you drag and drop them onto the timeline, you can use the audio blocks to adjust sound levels at certain parts of the video.

These are all the tools that help you adjust the video and audio files. You can cut and move the files depending on which tool you use.

The Screen to the left is used to watch specific clips or listen to specific audio clips before putting them onto the timeline. The screen to the right is used to watch the whole video.

I think we used Premiere Pro to it’s full potential. The cuts are smooth and the sound flows well.

Editing tools we used

This tool is used to navigate around Premiere Pro. It can also be used to select things and crop video clips.

This tool can be used to cut up clips. We used this tool when creating the fast paced static effect. We cut up the clip into segments creating fast paced cuts.Below is a screen shot of how the static clips looked when cut.

These tools can be used to navigate around the timeline. The icon to the left can be used to scroll across the timeline of the video, and the icon to the right can be used to either zoom in or out of the timeline. When you zoom in you can make more fine changes to the video, when you’re zoomed out you can see generally how the video flows.

Layering video clips

• As you can see in the images below we layered video clips in our production. We used L cuts and J cuts.

This is a J cut. The sound from the next clip starts before the video. This makes a smooth transition between cuts.

This is an L cut. The sound of the previous clip carries on onto the next shot, therefore making the cut smoother.

To overlay videos you have to place the different clips into different audio and video tracks. By adding more video and audio tracks you can overlay more clips.

Title

To create a new title click title at the top of Premiere Pro; then click new title, default still.

After selecting default still this box appears. This allows you to select the track name and the video settings.

Titles 2

This is the window you use when you’re creating your title.

These tools can be used to change the texts’ position. We did not use any of these tools because the window had already made our text central, which is what we wanted.

This is where you select the font you want for your title. We decided on choosing a font that looked a bit like static, black and white. You can choose other fonts from the drop down menu above. You can also choose whether you want your font to be bold, italic or underlined.

This part of the window can be used to edit the properties of the text. You can change the position of the text, the font properties (the font style, font size etc.), the colour and the opacity (how see-through it is) and the texture of the font.

After effectsThis is the After Effects window. We used After Effects to create a static effect for our CCTV shots.

As you can see we made the static clip 12 seconds long, therefore we had more than enough footage to use.

This is the static after we created it. It created the effect we wanted in our sequence.

Page 12: What I have learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product?

After Effects

This is the After Effects effect panel. We wanted to create a static effect. We added allot of noise to the image to create this.

After creating the static effect we saved it and imported it into Premiere Pro. We then used it in our titles. We cut it up into small sections to create a fast paced title that created more fear onto the audience.

Audio

We used Adobe Audition to import sounds into Premiere Pro (see next slide for more info). These are some of the sounds we downloaded. All of these sounds were used to create atmosphere in our sequence. We dragged the sound clips onto the sequences timeline sometimes overlaying them to create a fearful atmosphere.

When the track is on the timeline we can change the key frames to allow the track to change volume at various points, therefore you can fade in the sound or fade it out. This means there is a smoother transition between audio tracks..

Adobe Audition

This the screen for Adobe Audition. We used Adobe audition to find sounds for our sequence. The panel to the right of the screen is where you find the sounds. You can use the search bar to search for specific sound or you can just use the dropdown menu to choose a category to look through. To download a track you have to click the small arrow, once the loading screen is complete- you simply drag the audio clip into Adobe premiere.

The timeline

This is the timeline from our video after we finished editing, using all the things I learnt about Premiere Pro.

Tumblr

When you click on this icon you can post blocks of text to your Tumblr blog. You can also embed things in Tumblr such as documents from Scribd or videos from YouTube. You can do this by clicking this icon.

When you click this icon you can post photos onto our Tumblr. You can add text to the end of your photos describing what they are.

When you click this icon you can post links to websites. This is useful for referring to examples of media websites.

When you click this icon you can post videos straight to Tumblr via YouTube, just by copying the web address of the video.

Tumblr Continued

This is how my Tumblr looks. I think the theme is very important because it always creates the first impression of my blog. I chose this theme because I thought it was very appropriate. As you can see to the right some of the posts are displayed on screens with a film cameras projecting them. Since I’m studying film I thought this was suitable.

YouTube

• We used YouTube to upload our videos.• After uploading our videos to YouTube we can embed them

into our blogs.• We have learnt the importance of tags. When uploading your

video to YouTube you have various things you can fill out; one is the title (The Waiting), the description of the video and the tags. The tags make it easier to search and find your video on YouTube, you would tag your video with appropriate words e.g. horror, scary, media.

• A link to the Chew Valley Media YouTube channel is linked to the title below…

• Scribd is an online method of uploading documents to share.

• By signing in and clicking upload you can upload any document of your own to Scribd.

• Once the document is uploaded you can embed your document to Tumblr via clicking the embed button and copying and pasting the embed code into Tumblr.

• Scribd has been very useful because it meant that we could post our storyboards and scripts to Tumblr.

• Prezi has been very useful for showing my evaluation of my sequence. It gives us a different way of presenting our work, by creating almost a video presenting our points.

• You first get to choose a theme for your Prezi. Each theme conveys a different message e.g. for my Prezi on distributors I used a magnifying glass theme, as if I’m looking into the subject.

• You can add videos and photos onto Prezi to make it more elaborate.
