Patron Driven Acquisition - Aggregators
Benefits:• Real-time access • Only pay for titles users
actually use• Potential to fill gaps in
collection• Saves staff time?
Negatives:• DRM • ££££££££££!• What do we do when
the money runs out?
• US libraries, e.g. Utah, Denver & Arizona
• Denver: 53% of print purchases never borrowed between 2005-9
• Rick Anderson (Utah), UKSG 2011: traditional library collection “bad guess at patron needs” (we’ll all go home then…)
• Arizona – On Demand Delivery
University of Glasgow & PDA
• Small PDA ebook trial • Limited amount of money to spend• Limited amount of time to spend on title
selection• Opportunity to support new themes and
cross-subject research• Opportunity to review gaps in print title
selection
What’s out there - aggregators
• Various models available• 2 clicks and book is purchased• Rental• Suggest a Purchase• Set number of page views in one session• Library mediation
Users don’t care – let’s keep it simple!
