Kitchen fires are one of the primary areas within a home residence where fires can occur. If there is a stovetop fire, which of the following should never be used to extinguish a grease fire?

A. Sodium BicarbonateB. SaltC. FlourD. Wet Chemical

Test taker answers: C

That is incorrect.Flour “produces” a violent reaction that will cause the fire to spread if used on a grease fire. This ingredient must never be used. In the case of a grease fire, NIFAST recommendsseveral options: baking soda is a sodium bicarbonate, and is known as a regular drychemical and will extinguish a grease fire. If that is not available, covering a grease fire isanother option, but potentially dangerous for skin burns.

NIFAST has partnered with Stoveranger to provide homeowners a new, aestheticallydesigned stovetop fire safety product.  This is a non-explosive, non-pressurized automaticstove top fire extinguisher.  Visit www.nifast.org for more information.
