MULTIPLEXING

What is multiplexing

Why we use multiplexing?

Advantages of Multiplexing

WAVE LENGTH DIVISION MULTIPLEXING

WDM consider as FDM coupled with TDM

Use wave length in place of frequencies

Use fiber optical cable

Page 5: Wavelenght multiplexing

WAVE LENGTH DIVISION MULTIPLEXING

Combine multiple light source

Use Prism

Prism bends a beam of light based on the angle of incidence and frequency

TYPES OF WDM

Metro WDM (<200 km)

Long-haul or regional WDM (200 km to 800 km)

Extended long-haul WDM (800 km to 2000 km)

Ultra-long-haul WDM (>2000 km)

FREQUENCY BANDS

O-band (original)— A range from 1260 nm to 1360 nm

E-band (extended)— A range from 1360 nm to 1460 nm

S-band (short wavelength)— A range from 1460 nm to 1530 nm

C-band (conventional)— A range from 1530 nm to 1565 nm

FREQUENCY BANDS

L-band (long wavelength)— A range from 1565 nm to 1625 nm

U-band (ultra-long wavelength)— A range from 1625 nm to 1675 nm

BIDIRECTIONAL WDM

Page 11: Wavelenght multiplexing

Band-Separation Method : the transmitted channels are divided in two or four groups known as sub-bands

To prevent the adjacent bands from interfering with each other guard bit is used

Page 12: Wavelenght multiplexing

Interleaving-Filter Method : Interleaved channels are used in both directions of transmission.

Even channels travel east to west, whereas odd channels travel west to east.

Page 13: Wavelenght multiplexing

Circulator Method : optical circulators are used.

A circulator is a multiport device that allows signals to propagate in certain directions based on the port that the signal came from.

EXTENSION OF WDM

Coarse WDM : Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing combines up to 16 wavelengths onto a single fiber

20nm Spacing suited for the short-haul transport of data, voice,

video, storage, and multimedia services

Dense WDM : Dense Wave Division Multiplexing combines up to 96 wavelengths onto a single fiber

0.8 nm spacing suited for the short-haul and the long-haul

transport of data, voice, video, storage, and multimedia services
