Paint

• Paint is made up of pigments and oil or water- based binder. Paint can be used for identification , emphasis of hazards and danger and to maintain hygiene as paint facilitates easy cleaning

• Paint is cheap, easily applied and cleaned

• It gives textural and multi colour effects

Emulsion Paints

• These paints consist of synthetic resins and dyes dispersed in water, when dried they form tough, washable and wear resistant films. They are alkali resistant and are suitable for new ,damp plastered walls. They have little odor and quick to dry and suitable for redecoration of guest rooms

• Vinyl matt emulsion gives a matt, non shiny finish• Vinyl satin emulsion gives a subtle, soft- sheen

finish & more durable then matt• Vinyl silk emulsion gives a high sheen finish & most

durable then all

Alkyd Paints

• These are made up of synthetic resins called alkyds, which are widely used in the manufacture of paint and varnishes, vegetable oils (linseed oil) & mineral spirit as the solvent. They are easy to apply and are durable. They are available in glass, silk and flat finish

• Used in those place that are subjected to heavy wear

Multicolor paints

• This uniquely decorative paints consist of individual flecks of different colors, subtly blended to achieve the natural appearance of such materials as granite, cork, leather and stone. It is a dispersion of cellulose colors in water.

Textured or plastic Paints

• These are usually plaster based (limestone, sand, water). They give a textured finish to the surface. After the paints is applied it is worked upon by using combs, palette knives etc

Micro Porous Paints

• They have a rubberized base and give only a slight gloss. They offer elasticity, allowing the movement when the surface expands or contracts

Cleaning painted surface

• Light dust can be removed using a duster, broom or vacuum cleaner. The surface should be damp wiped or washed when necessary

2. Wallpaper

• Wallpaper is obtained in various sizes. The price varies depending on the design & quality of the materials used.

• It has a smooth or textured effect• Various pattern such as floral,

geometric, striped, abstract etc are available

• The choice depends on the aspect, light, size and use of the room

Types of Wallpaper

• Machine printed wallpaper- commonly available

• Hand-printed wallpaper – expensive, not widely available

• Spongeable or washable – this paper has a thin coat on transparent plastic over the pattern on underlying pulp paper

• Anaglyptic – plain embossed patterned paper which is normally painted over

• Wood chips- it is cream in color & has saw dust or wood chips mixed when the paper is in pulp form

• Flock -This is one of the oldest type of wallpaper. It is treated with adhesive to which silk, wool or cotton or any synthetic fibers are stuck to give raised patterns, which look and feel like velvet. Used in pubs, restaurants, clubs

• Metallic paper- printed with gold or other metallic powders, it is expensive

• Hessian- it durable jute cloth with paper backing• Marble paper- wallpaper with marble effect• Japanese grass cloth- thick seeds (stalks) of

grass tied together on to paper backing

• Lining paper- do not give decorative finish, it is used on bare walls and ceilings in preparation for painting or papering

• Pulps- cheapest type of wallpaper, it is just paper with a pattern printed upon it

• Vinyl coated- thin skin of vinyl with a paper backing with any pattern printed on to the vinyl

• Vinyl – vinyl skin is thicker then vinyl coated• Embossed- embossed pattern wallpaper with a

decorative finish

Cleaning of wallpaper

• Surface dust can be removed using duster, broom, or vacuum cleaner

Wood Paneling

Nature of wood paneling• very hard• Well seasoned• Decorative in appearance• Sound insulation• May be used to cover a wall completely or form a dado• Insulation against heat• Gives a warm and elegant feeling• Wood paneling may be solid or veneeredWood paneling lasts for years with little maintenance if

proper precaution are taken against woodworm

Cleaning of wood paneling

• Dust should be removed using vacuum cleaner. When the panels become dirty they should be wiped over with white spirit, vinegar and water and then polished.

• It usually used in the form of a mirror, which reflects light

• It can make a room or corridor appear larger

• Metals may be used for their decorative and hygienic qualities.

• The metals normally used are copper, anodized aluminum and stainless steel

• Others – Linoleum, carpets, marble, granite

• Cork tiles can be a beautiful and durable way to provide warmth to a room

• Cork tiles are a good alternative to wood and provide a unique, eye catching appearance
