DESCRIPTION

Teams from each local public and private high school in the greater Charlotte region are invited to compete in this international knowledge competition on questions relating to foreign policy, geography, current events, and more. Academic WorldQuest has grown in popularity that participating schools have assigned coaches and teams who compete for the honor of representing their school in this competition. This program encourages an understanding for global issues and team building in a very engaging (and fun) way. The winning school is then invited to participate in the national Academic WorldQuest held in Washington, D.C.

Game Play

A. Assign a team member to be a Scribe for recording your team’s answers.

B. Carefully record answers on color-coded sheets that correspond with each round – one sheet per team per round.

C. Write CLEARLY.

D. There will be 10 questions per round and the rounds will be timed.

E. You will have 30 seconds per question after the entire question has been read by the moderator.

F. At the end of each round, answer sheets will be collected and graded by the scorers.

G. There will be a Warm Up Round followed by ten competition rounds…and in the case of a tie, there will be a Tiebreaker Round!

H. After three consecutive rounds, there will be a review of the questions and answers.

Page 6: WACC Academic WorldQuest 2006

Game Play Most questions will be multiple choice, and some

will ask for fill-in-the blank responses. For fill-in-the blank questions, judges will follow the

“close enough” rule unless spelling is a specific requirement in the question.

For personal names, last names suffice unless otherwise required in the question.

For country names, any answer that clearly and properly identifies a country, state, or other entity will receive credit, even if there may be a more precise technical name (for example: “U.S.” and “United States” would both be acceptable answers).

Page 7: WACC Academic WorldQuest 2006

Game Play Any team with a serious concern about the answer

to a competition question can explain their argument in writing to the Judge Committee.

The appeals process is available to teams that strongly believe an answer provided is incorrect, or another answer should be accepted.

Appeal forms will be available from someone on the Judge Committee. Complete the form and return it to him or her.

Each team has a maximum of two appeals. Appeals will be considered by the Judge

Committee during question review periods. The outcome of your appeal will be provided

after the completion of the competition.

Page 8: WACC Academic WorldQuest 2006

Game Play Final scores will be available after the award

presentations; however, teams’ answer sheets or the competition questions themselves will not be made available after the event.

During the competition rounds, students must stay seated at their tables.

Any team found using an atlas, dictionary, almanac, palm pilot, cell phone, newspaper, or any other unacceptable means of “assistance” will be immediately disqualified from the competition.

All electronic devices - especially cell phones - must be turned off during the competition.

Anyone not having a good time or taking the proceedings too seriously may be disqualified at the discretion of the judges!!!!
