Introduction

Visual presentation is a creative and attractive way of catching the attention of employers and clients.

Visual presentation will catch the eye of the public more than something written in black and white. While writing is a necessary to possess, one must know how to use design and present their work using color and creativity to make their writing and organizational skills stand out.

When resumes and advertising materials are creatively designed, those resumes will stand out in the usual stack of black and white resumes.

If you really want to stand out to an employer for a job or an internship, adding some form of marketing material or cover letter exhibiting your writing skills, is a sure way to move up the ladder.

The Purpose & Power of Visual Presentation

The answer is No! Any college major can design and advertise a form of visual presentation that can attract a potential employer or client.

Additionally, criminal justice majors, psychology, sociology, public administration, and many other majors can make a visual portfolio that is attractive to clients or employers.

What about taking 20 years of job experience, and putting that into a visual presentation. This is no problem. While you may not realize it, you use some of the same skills on one job as you use on the other. While you may not have worked as a designer or photographer, using social media, Word, or PowerPoint can be powerful advertising tools that are great to showcase your skills.

Do I have to be a design or photo major to showcase a form of visual presentation?

The Night Before Halloween was a name for an episode of Dateline on ID. In this episode, Detective Jim Wallace uses his past skill in architectural design to solve a crime. Part of being a detective is seeing what others cannot see, and using his design skill, he was able to see a vital piece of evidence in a photograph that no one else did.

This is how an individual can use their skills in the most unlikely of times.

One of the best ways to build a job specific resume is looking at the job that you are applying for, and make a visual and print resume based on your current skills that can help you at that job. You never know how your past skills and experience can help you either get a position you are applying for, or for a current position, which could possibly get you a promotion.

These are just some of the visual marketing tools that exist. However, two powerful interactive marketing tools is having a blog, and the old-fashioned human interaction.

Networking is everything! You can have all the skills and in the world, and without advertising them creatively, standing out of the crowd will be hard to do.

Attending conferences, seminars, subscribing to trade magazines, and joining professional associations are some of the best way to not only learn about your industry, but is a great way to use your advertising materials to either make new business connections, clients, or a job offer.

Additionally, connecting with people in same industry on social media sites, such as Linked In, will help enhance your career. In my experience, I have connected with law enforcement professionals that I have interviewed when working on research papers.

Network! Network! Network!

The possibilities are endless, however, you are in control. Just think about Detective Wallace. The skills that he gained in the past, helped in his career, and those two skills would usually never be connected, or discussed in the same setting.

As I look at my background, I got creative and used those design and photography skills to enhance my projects as a Public Administration major. Just think about the skills that you already possess, and how you can apply those in your major or career.

Get creative!!! Life is not all black and

white. Throw in some color!!!
