Historical Facts• Vietnam first civilizations are seen in the Red

River Valley, 5,000 years ago conquered by a Chinese lord who established a kingdom; Nam Viet.

Historical Fact

• In 1802, a Nguyen lord, with the help of the French, defeated the Trinh and renamed the country Vietnam. By 1890 France had taken over.

Another Historical Fact

• In 2007, about 50 people died when Can Tho Bridge Collapse, causing Vietnam's worst engineering disaster. In 2011, Can Tho International Airport opened. And 60 people had died.

• Vietnam occupies the eastern and southern part of the Indochinese peninsula in Southeast Asia, with the South China Sea along its entire coast.

• In 1977, border clashes between Vietnam and Cambodia intensified, as well as accusations by its former ally Beijing that Chinese residents of Vietnam were being subjected to persecution. Beijing cut off all aid and withdrew 800 technicians.

The Country Capital City

• The country’s capital city is Hanoi.

1st large city in Vietnam• Can Tho is the fourth largest city in Vietnam,

and the largest city in the Mekong Delta.• It’s noted for its Floated market, Rice paper

making village, and picturesque rural canals. It had a population of 1.2 million as of 2011, and is located on the south bank of the Hau River, a branch of the Mekong.

2nd large city in Vietnam• Haiphong is the third largest city of Vietnam

and northern Vietnam's most important seaport with its deep-water anchorage and large maritime facilities. The city's name means “coastal defense” and it is named the Flamboyant City because of the many Delonix regia planted throughout it.

The Population

• In 2013, there was 89.71 million people in Vietnam. The population of Vietnam is estimated at 92,547,959 as of July 1, 2014.
