In August of 2010, the Ministry of Education and Culture appointed 13 national development and service centres. One of the appointed is the National Development Centre for Online Youth Work (Verke), coordinated by the City of Helsinki Youth Department.

Main objectives of Verke

Verke creates, produces and develops youth-oriented work and activities through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the Internet.

In addition, the centre acts as an expert and support service and focuses on increasing information and knowhow related to its area of expertise. The target groups of these operations are young people as well as professionals in youth-oriented fields and students.

Activities

Are developed through national and multidisciplinary cooperative work between the public, private and third sectors.

The personnel of the centre comprises employees from the City of Helsinki Youth Department, the Social Services Department, the Health Centre and the Education Department.

Mission is to Develop a Nation vide multi-disciplinary network to function as the key developer of the work and services that are directed to Youth

Verke is an independent development partner across the fields of Youth work professionals (multidiciplinary and multiprofessional)

Verke does not seek to maintain services, it rather focuses on Nation wide activities to support the development of a multi-disciplinary collaboration and shared intellectual resources

Youth participation in the development process is essential

Verke makes it possible for all stakeholders (public, private and associations) in the Youth Work sector to participate in the co-operation to create and develop Services targeted for the Youth.
