PROGRAMS OF STUDYThe School of Nursing offers two graduate

programs: PhD in Nursing and Master of Nursing (MN).

PhD ProgramThe goal of the doctoral program in nursing is to

prepare nurse scholars:To provide a new contribution to disciplinary

knowledgeTo demonstrate a critical understanding of

works of scholars in the fieldTo demonstrate original thinking and research

Master of Nursing Advanced Nursing Practice

All students graduating from the MN program, graduate with an MN or Master of Nursing.

All MN students take the same core courses and then additional course work to meet the requirements for Advanced Practice Leadership, Nurse Practitioner, or Nurse Educator options.

All options include practice courses and require a thesis or project completion.

Advanced Practice LeadershipGraduates of the program will be prepared to fill

advance practice roles such as clinical nurse specialist and clinical leadership in a wide range of settings including:

Acute careLong term careHome careCommunity care

Page 7: UVic Master of Nursing

Nurse PractitionerGraduates of the program will be prepared to

work as Family Nurse Practitioners.Graduates provide primary health care for

people across the life span in a wide range of primary health care settings.

Upon program completion graduates are eligible to write CRNBC examinations leading to licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in British Columbia.

Nurse EducatorGraduates of the program will be prepared for

Nurse Educator roles in intersectoral settings.Graduates will have an enriched capacity to

work across the health care delivery sector and academic settings with the skills to develop and to critique nursing practice/nursing education.

Page 9: UVic Master of Nursing

Program DeliveryCurrently the PhD program is an on-campus

program. In the MN program (APL, NP and NE) course

delivery is offered online with required onsite components including an onsite orientation.

Travel to clinical placements may be required.

Page 10: UVic Master of Nursing

Program CompletionThese programs admit part-time students;

however preference is given to full-time applicants.

Continuous registration in three terms per year is highly recommended to complete program requirements within the five year time limit.

Application ProcessApplications are available on the School of

Nursing website after September 15 of each year.

the Graduate admissions office by December 1, for Masters students and January 15, for doctoral students.
