Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Effect On EyesKshitij Shivhare ( 1st Year B.Sc. Optometry )
What Eye Problems Can UV Rays Cause
It is important to begin with a clear understanding of what UV radiation is. This may be more clearly pictured by defining what
it is not: UV is not light; it does not form part of the visible light spectrum.
It sits adjacent to the blue end of the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Type of UV Rays
There are four types of UV rays:
UV-A | UV-B | UV-C | UV-vaccumOver time, the effects of UV rays may help cause a number of eye
problems.
Long-term exposure to UV rays can lead to
Macular Degeneration | Cataract | Pterygium | Skin Cancer |Corneal Sunburn ( Photokeratitis )| Pinguecula
Who's at Risk for Eye Damage from the SunYes, everyone ( inc. Children ) is at risk for eye damage from UV
radiation that can lead to vision loss.
The risk of sun related eye problems is higher for people who:
Spend long hours in the sun Have had cataract surgery* or have certain retina disorders
Are on certain medicines, such as tetracycline, sulfa drugs, birth control pills, diuretics and tranquilizers that increase the eye's
sensitivity to light.
How to Protect Your Eyes from UV RaysYou can protect your eyes from UV rays in two important ways:
1- Know the dangers of UV rays.2- Wear proper eye protection and hats that block UV rays.
Water(100%) | Snow(85%) | Dry sand and concrete (25%) |Grass (3%)
Wear Sunglasses | A Brimmed Hat | Contact Lens
Choosing UV ProtectionYou should choose sunglasses that :
Reduce glare, Filter out 99-100% of UV rays, Protect your Eyes, Are comfortable to Wear And Do not distort colors.
Do Children need sunglasses ?Yes. Children are at special risk from the harmful effects of UV rays, since their eyes do not have the same ability as adults to protect from
UV radiation.Like adults, children should wear brimmed caps and sunglasses that
screen out 99 to 100% of UV rays.
UV Protection and Eye SafetyFor certain outdoor activities, we may also have to use eyewear
designed to provide impact protection for that activity.
