1. Set up camera-free tasks!!Example here:!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhtuZJFqzYE!!!!2. Video cameras in the teacher’s hands!!* Film colleagues in the staffroom answering questions that you intend to ask your

students (e.g. what are you doing at the weekend, etc.)!* Film students’ performances!!PS22 Chorus:!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOfXytNKwxY!!!!3. Video cameras in the students’ hands!!Reasons:!* Students already have their own devices (mobile phones) that we can use in or out of the

classroom.!* It is less stressful for students to film themselves / each other!* It gives students creative control!* It reduces our workload!* Students are so often the ones with the technical knowhow!* Students will own the content!* It can make it easier to get parental permission!* It opens the learning space (students can create video tasks outside the classroom and

at home)!!!!4. Incorporate video cameras into the task that you already do!!We can see spoken words on video as being an alternative to written words on paper. In other words, the tasks that we do can be the same but the medium of recording language can be different.!!Tower of useless chairs:!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muY5Fgev4Tw!!!!!!!!!! 5. Provide a video model!!A video model can provide students with a sample of the language that they are expected to use in the task. But it also provides them with an idea of the product (i.e. the video) that they are expected to create.!!Show students good quality videos produced by other learners or make your own.!!Jamie’s dad’s dog:!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRRXpeqwiqU!!Jamie cuts a mango (badly)!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwSJSpsmirk!!!6. Set commentary-only tasks!!Both of the example videos above are commentary only. That is, people do not appear in them. Setting commentary-only video tasks can be good for shy students. It can also make it easier to get permission.!!!7. Set collaborative tasks!!This can include filmmaking competitions or questions and answer video exchanges between students on different sides of the world.!!Mr W video: https://vimeo.com/57602916!!

“I think I was always misunderstood. People just didn’t seem to like me.

I think I annoyed them. I got on their nerves.

I don’t know why. That’s just the way it was. Maybe I was too intense.

Maybe I came on too strong. I don’t know. I really can’t say.

Yeah, it was lonely, really lonely. But you get used to it after a while.

And then one day, everything changed. Somebody finally accepted me for what I am.

Since I got this job, life has been completely different. I finally feel useful - good at something.” !

8. Offer basic technical advice!!Here is a video I made that demonstrates some basic principles:!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm52PhpzJb8!!!!9. Open the learning space!!Allow students to create videos at home or outside the classroom. This is especially good if they are not allowed to bring their devices into class.!!Also, offer students a choice - they can do a task as a written or video assignment.!!!!10. Feedback!!With students’ permission, you can play their videos on the classroom projector and make use of the pause button to give feedback.!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!During feedback, you can draw attention to / ask students to consider any of the following:!!* Overall communicative effectiveness (eyes up, use of gesture, etc.)!* Technical aspects of the video!* Use of markers, connectors and fillers!* Pronunciation, stress, phrasing and intonation!* Range of vocabulary!* Grammatical accuracy!!! 11. Scripting!!Compare Queen Elizabeth’s presenting style with Barack Obama’s. Fine videos of each on YouTube and let students decide which they prefer.!!Make use of :!* Scripts!* Bullet points!* Memory (learn a script off by heart)!* Teleprompter apps!!!The best teleprompter app that I have found is Prompterous:!* Apple here!* Android here!!!!12. Encourage editing!!Use a video like this as way of drawing attention to good editing:!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SyS73dPJXg!!Notes:!!* Shaky camera to give an amateurish feel!* Use of fast forward function at 0:16!* Use of ‘shots’ (as opposed to continuous footage)!* Close ups at 0:22!* Use of subtitles!!Other possibilities include:!* Transitions!* Intro text and credits!* Image stabilisation!* Audio enhancement!!Note that in many cases, you don’t have to show students *how* to do you. But point out that it is possible and let them find out for themselves if they don’t already know.
