Using the Web 2.0 for Alternative
Assessment in ELT
Cecilia Lemos - August 2011
Defining...
• What is Assessment?
• How is it different from testing?
• What do you understand by “Alternative Assessment”?
Comparing...
1. Focus on language 1. Focus on communication
2. Teacher-centered 2. Learner-centered
3. Isolated skills 3. Integrated skills
4. Emphasis on product 4. Emphasis on process
5. One-way correctness 5. Multiple solutions
6. Tests that test 6. Tests that teach
Traditional Alternative
(Richards & Renandya, 2002)
Concluding...
We are not supposed to evaluate how much information students retain but rather how
they use that information
And how can Web 2.0 toolshelp you with that?
Speaking...
• Tell your students to read a piece of news from a newspaper or news site.
• The students should choose one piece of news (or the teacher can tell them what news to read about).
• Students record their opinion about it or possible solutions (if applicable)
• Variations: film/book/restaurant reviews,
Fotobabble, Audioboo, Voicethread
Reading...
• Choose a book, short story or any text for the whole class to read
• Create a board for that reading• Students have to write favorite quotes/passages,
ask questions that come to mind while reading the text, new vocabulary they have learned
• Each type of post can have a specific color• Students have to reply to questions and posts
Linoit, Wallwisher, Pindax
Pindax (www.pindax.com)
Pindax (www.pindax.com)
Pindax (www.pindax.com)
One more for Reading...
• Choose a book, short story or any text for the whole class to read
• Create a word cloud with key words from the text• Students have to take turns choosing a word
from the cloud and saying how it’s related to the story
• Variation: Students write or record na audio file using the keywords to discuss/comment on the reading
Wordle, Tagxedo, Worditout
Listening...
• Choose na audio book or podcast of a story (or record one)
• Students have to read the story and create a comic strip retelling the story
• Variation: Give them the audio/podcast without the end of the story. Have students create the comic strip with na ending for it.
Zimmer Twins, Strip Generator
All Skills...
• After a week, month, unit or semester do some reflection in class about what they have learned
• Have students create a digital poster using Glogster about their learning during that period of time
• They can include: favorite activity, what I struggled with, a vocabulary log (with images), na audio reflection
Glogster
