What is Nēnē?

• Hawaii Children’s Choice Award

• Quality literature suggested by students, teachers, and librarians

• For students in Grades 4-6

Timeline for NēnēAugust - February:

– Students read from Nēnē Suggested list

October - November: – Students prepare for the contests

December:– Contest Deadline

February:– Voting deadline

March: – Nēnē Ceremony

Nēnē Suggested Reading List

• Nēnē Book Selection Committee• Books selected based on:

– Genre– Reading level– Male/Female Protagonist– Children’s Interest

Why Nēnē?

• Opportunity for children to– read recently published quality books– respond creatively and critically to works of

literature– use technology to showcase Nēnē literary

through voting for the Nēnē Award Winner

Persuasive Category

• Select one scene from the book• Describe what elements in the scene

made it important (imagery, point of view…)

• Suggested formats: – Poster, Essay, Website, Song & more

Interpretative Category

• Create a NEW scene or story for "Found" that fits into the book's timeline

• Suggested formats: Creative Story, Movie, Slideshow, Newspaper, etc.

Voting• Voting for the Nēnē Award takes place in January and

February.

• Deadline to submit votes is Thurs Feb 10, 2011.
