Philippine Folk Literature

Refers to the traditional lore of the folk, which can be any group of people bound together by some common factor such as language, religion, occupation etc.

Folklore covers the manners, customs, observances, superstitions, ballads, proverbs, etc. of the olden times.

Categories of Philippine folklore

1. folk narratives – myth, legend, kwentong bayan

Myth – (mythos means story) is a sacred story concerning the origins of the world. It is something that is born from truth

2. folk speech – bugtong, salawikain 3. folk songs – tell story

Gods and goddesses

Luzon Gods Bathala – main god of the tagalog; tagalog’s

chief god, the creator of the universe and humanity. The origin of his name is Sanskrit Battara Guru which means “The Great Teacher”

Apo Laki

The son of Bathala who is the god of the sun and lord of the war. To Pangasinense, Apo Laki is the god of ama-Kaoley.

Anitun Tabu – tagalog goddess of the wind and rain

Dian Masalanta

Ancient tagalog’s goddess of love, pregnancy, childbirth

Idianale – ancient tagalog goddess of animal husbandry

Lakan Bakod –ancient tagalog god of gardens who protect and watch over plants and crops.

Lakan Pati

Ancient Tagalog’s deity of cultivated fields, a hermaphrodite. Dog.

MAYARI – ancient one eyed tagalog goddess and protector of the moon.

TADAKLAN – Tingguian god of thunder,as worshipped by those people of central luzon. He has a pet, Kimat, the lightning dog.

Gugurang chief god and keeper of a sacred fire atop Mt. Mayon.

Haliya – Bicolano goddess of the moon and the protector of women.
