Today’s Objectives

• a service-learning, health literacy initiative developed by UnitedHealth Group and Youth Service America

•grants of $500 (sometimes up to $1,000)

•to help youth, ages 5-25, create and implement local, hands-on programs to fight childhood obesity

UnitedHealth HEROES Grant Program

An effective teaching and learning strategy integrating meaningful community servicewith academic study and reflective practiceto enrich learning, build civic engagement, and strengthen communities.

What is Service-Learning?

HEROES grants encourage semester-long projects: Launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 17, 2011)

Culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011)

A Semester of Service

October 22nd: Application deadline

December 13th: Announce winners

January 4th, 2011: MOU due

January 14th, 2011: Grant funds distributed

January 17th, 2011: MLK Day

April 15th-17th, 2011: Global Youth Service Day

May, 2011: Post-project reports due

UnitedHealth HEROES Timeline

•The applicant must be one of the following: educator, service-learning coordinator, student in a health profession, public health professional, community-based nonprofit or group. •The applicant must at least 17 years of age. •All 50 states and DC are eligible to apply.•Previous YSA grantees are welcome to apply.

•The project must be a service-learning project about childhood obesity and related health issues.•Children and/or youth, ages 5-25 must be the primary volunteers in your service-learning project.

•The service-learning project activities must take place between January 2011 and April 2011.•A significant component of your service-learning project must take place on Global Youth Service Day, 2011 (April 15-17, 2011).
