Patents are used to protect the ideas of a person or organisation. It stops others from copy an idea which then protects the patent holder from losing out on profit for an idea that they could be making money from.

Patent holders can licence others giving them permission to use theiridea provided they pay a licence fee.

patents can be good if it costs a lot todevelop the idea (like in the case of drugs or technology).

They can also be hindering and stopnew ideas from being developed outof older ones.

HW38 - Legislation that can protect and affect businesses and users:A very important piece of legislation is the The Health and Safety at Work Act (1974).The Act makes it a legal requirement for businesses to undertake a risk assessment of all the workplace, to ensure the safety of workers and prevent accidents. The Act specifies that:● safety procedures must be displayed for all to see● workers must be trained to use machines and equipment● appropriate protective clothing must be worn if needed● all risks must be controlled and monitored
