Dear Alumni,

I am indeed very happy to pen down some random thoughts on the occasion of our Annual

Day being celebrated on the 24 December.

I missed out on the last one as I was away, but I am happy to be able to participate in this

one physically. We are coming out with this souvenir-cum-bulletin to celebrate and update

our alumni about the happenings of the last year.

UAA has enhanced its efforts with a very active participation of each and every member of the new BOG with a lot

of young enthusiastic faces inducted. I am really happy to see the interest shown by the young BOG members

willingly contributing to the needs of our alma mater and the Alumni Association. Sustained efforts of BOG and

other members with the able support from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G.D. Yadav, we have been able to have a

quantum jump in the membership.

Spectacular academic and cultural activities planned by the students namely EXERGY, MANZAR, YICC AND

YRCC and SPORTS SAGA were partly supported by the Alumni Association. The UAA also financially supported

needy students through interest-free loan – scholarship and continued to support factory visits and seminars. A

donation of Rs.5,11,000 by the batch of 2000 towards the scholarship and financial loan assistance to the needy

students is sincerely appreciated and I hope that all future batches take inspiration from this and contribute to the

cause of the ICT and UAA.

The assistance provided by the Alumni Association to the Training and Placement Cell of the ICT has been well

received from the student community. In line with their requirements, UAA have embarked upon a half-day seminar

for the students titled ‘Career Opportunities’ and it has been decided to plan this as a series of such seminars

through periodic engagements of the students. My thanks to all the alumni who participated and shared their

professional experience with the students.

UAA Chapters continue to be active with get-togethers conducted in U.S.A. and U.K. The Foundation Day function

with the Chief Guest, Dr. Vijay Kelkar was a stupendous success and the alumni and the distinguished alumnus

award winners’ participation with their families made the occasion indeed memorable.

I would like to put on record my sincere thanks to the entire BOG team for their sustained interest and active

participation in conducting the affairs of UAA.

Here’s wishing you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year 2012!

Warm regards,

Professor A. B. Pandit

3 UAA Annual Day Celebrations 24th December, 2011

The prime objective of the UAA is to reach out to the alumni and build bridges

with their alma mater. In earlier times this implied getting together in the real

world, at social gatherings, conferences & workshops, events (such as

Foundation Day and Annual Day etc.), but more and more the reaching out is

happening in the digital space.

UAA has recognised this and has launched its website, www.udctalumni.org.in, thanks to the efforts

taken in particular by Dr. Uday Lajmi and his team of developers. The website has made a modest

beginning – the challenge going ahead will be to keep it relevant, contemporary and lively. Dr.

Lajmi has some very exciting ideas of how this will happen, so alumni are requested to watch this

space!

The UAA has also supported a nascent effort of enthusiastic students to launch an interactive

website – theChemicalWeb.com – to provide a platform for students from across the country. While

the initial focus is understandably on ICT, the idea is to provide students a window to other educational

institutes in India and abroad and also on the industry.

Staying relevant to students is vital – after all they are the alumni of the future – and the UAA has

redoubled efforts to address their needs. Employment opportunities top the list of concerns for

students – at least ones in the final year – and the UAA has only this month organised a workshop

highlighting career options in the chemical industry. The message that came across loud and clear

from this workshop is that opportunities abound: the chemical industry has still a long way to go in

terms of growth and this will entail significant investments that will need human capital in all forms

– research & development, project planning & execution, marketing & sales, technical support, etc.

The December workshop is only the first of a series that are planned and alumni are welcome to

contribute to this effort.

This bulletin has a feature on the Division of the Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology (DPST),

which is in a singular position to play an enhanced role in a booming business environment. The

DPST has extended its outreach efforts, both with alumni and with international agencies. This was

manifest in a recent get-together of its alumni to mark the occasion of the inauguration of a new

conference centre, and the hugely successful Indo-US Symposium on Nanomedicine. Dr. Padma

Devarajan, Head, DPST, believes that this symposium marks only a beginning of a long and fruitful

programme in this upcoming area.

Future issues of this bulletin will feature other departments.

Thank you for reading.

The Board of Governors of the UAA organized a symposium on ‘Career Horizons for Chemical Engineersand Technologists’ at the ICT on 10 December 2011 for the benefit of students.

The objectives of the programme are to make students aware of various career options and also to gearthem up for the recruitment process they would be soon undergoing.

ICT has already opened a Placement Cell, which organizes campus recruitment programmes and alsoguides students for the recruitment process.

The program consisted of a curtain-raiser speech by Mr. Dinesh Deshpande, Director, Hindustan PetroleumCorporation Ltd. (HPCL) and a distinguished alumnus of ICT who has experience in various functions inindustry and was also associated with HR function during his career.

Bright growth prospects for industry

Mr. Deshpande urged those students who wished to pursue higher education to do so, as it adds value andperspective to careers. He saw exciting times for the Indian chemical industry in general, with overall economicgrowth, and drew parallels with the build-up of the refining industry. “India’s crude oil refining capacity hasgrown from just 40-mtpa in 1977 to more than 200-mtpa now, and the chemical industry has grown just asfast.”

Among the skills most sought after by the industry, he added, were process control engineers. “India isemerging as a crucible of process engineers and all the leading EPC companies now operate from Indiaserving local and international projects,” he noted. Project jobs, Mr. Deshmukh added, enhance people andleadership skills, and give opportunities to interact with diverse cultures.

He urged students coming for interviews to have a conceptual understanding of issues and subjects, and notbe worried about the details. “There seems to be a great deal of diffidence amongst students when they turnup for interviews, and this is wholly unnecessary.”

An Indo-US joint symposium on ‘Nanomedicine: Prospects & Challenges’ was held November 14-15, 2011,

at the ICT. The symposium was sponsored by the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF), which

was established in 2000 under an agreement between the governments of India and the USA.

Prof. Padma Devarajan, Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology, ICT and Prof.

Vinod Labhasetwar, Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, Ohio), were the coordinators of the symposium, which

featured 17 plenary and invited talks by scientists from both India and USA, besides 74 abstracts for poster

presentation.

The presentations touched upon various aspects of nanotechnology including:

 Synthesis of different nanomaterials; and

Delivery of different therapeutics for treatment of cancers, cardiovascular conditions, infectious diseases

etc.

This symposium created a platform for prominent international scientists and business experts, to discuss

the latest trends in research, development and commercialization of nanomedicine. In addition to the exchange

of ideas and knowledge, the symposium is expected to foster collaboration between the US and Indian

investigators in future to benefit young investigators and scientists.

Long history of development

Speaking at the event, at which Prof. M.M. Sharma, former Director, ICT, was the Chief Guest, pointed

out that India’s ancient Ayurvedic system of medicine includes a sub-division, Bhasma, dealing with

colloidal metal nanoparticles used in treatment of various ailments – possibly the earliest nanomedicine.

Prof. G.D. Yadav, Vice-Chancellor, ICT reviewed various nanotechnologies and their biomedical applications

and stressed the need for multidisciplinary interactions. He also elaborated on the immense potential of

nanomedical applications.

Dr. Rajiv Sharma, Executive Director, IUSSTF, announced that IUSSTF is accepting proposals to establish

collaborative centers between Indian and US institutions.

Prof. Labhasetwar stressed that nanomedicine is about:

 Innovation – such as synthesis of new nanomaterials for imaging, drug delivery and diagnosis;

 Translational research – moving laboratory discoveries to the bedside;

Better health outcomes – as it can directly affect human health, especially when nanoparticle-mediated

drug delivery proves more effective and less toxic than conventional therapy); and

Economics – as new technologies are being developed and commercialized.

Interactions with biological systems

Dr. Samir Mitragotri, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of California (Santa Barbara)

described the technique of fabricating nano- and microparticles of different shapes and sizes and presented

data on how these structures interact with their biological environment.

Prof. P. Devarajan, ICT demonstrated how irregularly shaped nanoparticles are trapped in the spleen. This

tendency is significant as the spleen acts as a reservoir for many pathogens. Her data demonstrate that

these irregularly shaped nanoparticles can be effectively used to deliver drugs to treat infections of the

spleen.

Dr. Sanyog Jain presents ‘Alkyl Amines – UICT Foundation

Day Lecture’

Dr. Sanyog Jain, Associate Professor, Centre for Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology, Dept. of Pharmaceutics,

National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali (Punjab), presented the ‘Alkyl

Amines – UICT Foundation Day Endowment Lecture’ on ‘Design, Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of

Novel Multifunctional Carbon Nanotubes Based Smart Drug Delivery Platforms’ on October 1, 2011.

Prof. Padma V. Devarajan, Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology, ICT, presided

over the lecture.

The talk presented a glimpse of recent research activities dealing with the successful exploitation of carbon

nanotubes (CNTs) for concurrently targeted cancer therapy and multimodal imaging.

Starting with the basics of CNT functionalization, the talk gradually expanded its depth and breadth towards

the functionalizations density dependence of CNTs’ toxicity and bio-distribution in vivo. A major part of the

presentation focused on the design, synthesis, physicochemical and biological evaluations of multifunctional

CNTs, concurrently tethered with fluorophore, radiolabel, tumor targeting molecules and anticancer agents.

The presentation also divulged some of the exclusive cocktail-recipes, that have been explored by Dr. Jain’s

group to augment the anti-tumor efficacy of a variety of anticancer agents using novel, ligand-anchored

CNTs as the ferrying boat.

Dr. Amit Misra, Central Drug Research Institute, described an inhalable particle-based delivery system for

treatment of tuberculosis.

Dr. Manoj Kharkar, Dow Wolff Cellulosics (Horgen, Switzerland) spoke on nanomaterials and safety. This is

an important topic as the use of nanomaterials in commercial products is on the rise.

Dr. Purnima Parkhi, Agilent Technologies, described spectroscopic imaging techniques for biomedical

applications, particularly for identifying abnormal tissue composition in various disease conditions (e.g.,

discriminating between cancerous and normal cells).

‘Nanotechnology is at a cross-roads’

In his concluding comments, Prof. Labhasetwar reiterated that nanotechnology is at a cross-roads – in terms

of the investment in this technology, our expectations for it, and the array of potential outcomes, particularly

in the field of medicine.

“Have we met the expectations originally outlined since the nanotechnology initiative was launched about a

decade ago?” he asked. “We have a better understanding of nanomaterials and the challenges we face in

translating these for biomedical applications than a decade ago. It gives us confidence as we see the entry

of the first nanomaterial-based pharmaceuticals into the marketplace. It is an indication that the field of

nanomedicine has matured, and there is more to come.”

Prof. Devarajan announced that a special issue based on the theme of the symposium is planned for publication

in Drug Delivery and Translational Research, an official journal of the Controlled Release Society.

ICT also put up a Mime and Dance performance on the theme of the symposium, ‘A Nanochronicle,’ which

charted the development of nano from the Indian bhasma to the serious issue of nanotoxicity.

2nd February 2012 will be the onset of a three-day cultural festival, which has now established itself in thehearts of all Mumbaikars - MANZAR!

The festival is back, and how. Manzar 2012, with its theme being Mumbai, is sure to cater to the tastes of oneand all. With events ranging from Fine arts, which gets your creative juices flowing; to dance that is sure tomake you want to move those muscles; not to mention foot tapping music; befuddled minds exercised in thePersonality Contest; and verbal battles in literary events, we have something for everyone.

Simple life, a romantic environment, two colours, a feeling of nostalgia and the likes of K.L. Saigal, BimalRoy, V. Shantaram, and Guru Dutt revisited. Black and white is a collage of performances on screen and onstage, including mega screen audio visuals, where performers on stage blend with the celluloid and music.En route, we meet the stylish Dev Anand, tragedy king Dilip Kumar, showman Raj Kapoor, the beautifulMadhubala, the classy Meena Kumari, and “Yahoo” Shammi Kapoor, to name a few. This performancepaints the environment black & white and disseminates a feeling of contentment through the melodies of thegolden era of Indian cinema from 1945 to 2001.

The Big Band theory, which is one of the biggest and indeed best rock band competitions in the city, is gettingbigger this time. With original compositions from bands like ‘Wired anxiety’, ‘Devoid’ etc. the audience waspretty much left with sore throats last year, with all that shouting. Get your adrenaline rushing, ears ringingand muscles aching (head banging isn’t something you’d be able to resist, we warn you) while you standamongst rock fans from all over the city, bound by one single thread – Music – and enjoy the experience ofa lifetime.

Our youth is of course talented, to say the very least. We, at Manzar, help nurture this talent and give it theplatform it would probably not be privileged enough to have otherwise. Competing with the best of the city, these artists find not only invigorating competition, but also the best in their very own selves. Tapping thebest in everyone is after all the primary motto of any cultural festival, and we assure you, there’s no onebetter than us in doing that.

So we urge you to come join us, not just to experience, but to live this cultural festival like never before –Mumbai ishtyle.
