ENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGYTopic : AIR POLLUTION
TYPES OF AIR POLLUTION
1. Acid Rain2. Smog3. Greenhouse effect4. Depletion of ozone hole
ACID RAIN
• industrial amounts of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and general pollutants from the air cause a drastic increase of the acidity of the precipitation and do also harm plants, humans, and buildings
SMOG • Derived from burning of large amounts of coal within a city, vehicular emission
from internal combustion engines , industrial fumes, and photochemical smog• It can inflame breathing passages, decrease the lungs' working capacity, cause
shortness of breath, pain when inhaling deeply, wheezing, and coughing. • It can cause eye and nose irritation and it dries out the protective membranes of
the nose and throat and interferes with the body's ability to fight infection, increasing susceptibility to illness
DEPLETION OF OZONE HOLE
Cont.
GREENHOUSE EFFECT• The greenhouse effect is a process by which thermal radiation from a planetary
surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-radiated in all directions.
• Solar radiation at the frequencies of visible light largely passes through the atmosphere to warm the planetary surface
• then emits this energy at the lower frequencies of infrared thermal radiation. Infrared radiation is absorbed by greenhouse gases, which in turn re-radiate much of the energy to the surface and lower atmosphere
