Mary Tudor was the only child born to Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon

Died: 17 November 1558St. James's Palace

The first queen to rule England in her own right, she was known as 'Bloody Mary' for her persecution of Protestants in a vain attempt to restore Catholicism in England.

Mary first met her husband Philip of Spain in the gardens of Wolvesey, the Bishop’s Palace at Winchester in the evening of the 23rd July 1554. The couple married two days later at Winchester Cathedral.

Coronation: 1 October 1553 Westminster Abbey. Mary had a good childhood as a young princess. But, as time went on and no little brothers followed, Mary's father tried to find different things. Eventually, Henry got an annulment from Catherine, and married his second Queen: Anne Boleyn. Mary was declared illegitimate and was to no longer be called "princess", but "The Lady Mary".

Elizabeth I

When did she live?Elizabeth was the daughter of King Henry VIII. She was born in 1533. Her grandfather Henry VII was the first Tudor king of England. Elizabeth became Queen of England in 1558. She died in 1603. Why is Elizabeth famous?

Elizabeth I ruled England alone. She did not marry. So although she was queen, England had no king. This was unusual at the time. The Elizabethan Age was an exciting part of English history. There were new ideas, and arguments about religion. There were wars with Spain. English explorers sailed to new lands.
