IS THERE ANYONE HERE WHO DOESN’T WATCH TELEVISION?

T.R.P

Page 3: TRP

TRP stands for “TELEVISION RATING POINT”.

These points were introduced in 1986 to assess the viewership of DD programmes.

It’s the criterion which gives the popularity of a particular show being telecasted on the television.

Page 4: TRP

How is it calculated? A device called “ People’s meter “is

attached to the T.V sets in a few thousands viewers houses for caluclating this.

These numbers are treated as sample.

This meter actually records the time and frequency of a programme that a viewer watches on a particular day.

Page 5: TRP

The first method to calculate T..R.P is “FREQUENCY MONITORING”.

In this “Peoples meters” are installed in sample homes and these electronic gadgets continously record data about the channel watched by the family members.

It reads the frequencies of channels, which are later decoded into the name of channels and the agency prepares a national data on the basis of its sample homes readings.

Page 6: TRP

This technique is not preferred much because “Peoples meter” is a costly equipment which is imported from abroad.

And also the cable operators frequently change the frequencies of the different channels before sending signals to the homes.so it may be very misleading to read a channel according to a particular frequency.

Second technique is more reliable and relatively new to India.

In “PICTURE MATCHING TECHNIQUE” people meter continously records a small portion of the picture that is being watched on that particular T.V set .along with this agency also records all the channels data in the form of small picture portion.

Data colected from the sample homes is later on matched with the main data to interpret the channel name

And in this way national rating is produced.

How do TV serials earn money?TV serials earns money through

advertisements ,rate of advertisements is decided on the basis of T.R.P of that programme.

All the media publications earns money through advertisements.

Popularity of the show is directly proportional of rate of advertisements shown between the breaks.

Page 9: TRP

The serials success and ad-worthyness is decided by the television rating point it gains during its runtime.

Depending on which time slot the show airs and its popularity the advertisements rates are decided.

Generally rate is on per second basis.

A part of the earning goes to the producer of the program and other to the channel.

Page 10: TRP

The director/producer have to pay some amount to the channel for letting their show to be telecasted in their channel.

Moreover they even have to pay to actors & entire crew who are working for the show.

So,how do the producer pay everyone and still be in profits if his show has high T.R.P?
