Questions 6 is based on the letter below. (Adapted from The Star, March 2010)

6 What does Concerned Citizen propose to discourage people from smoking?

A Impose fines on smokers for polluting the environment B Smokers pay higher taxes than non-smokers C The price of cigarettes be hiked till it hurts D Better enforcement of non-smoking laws

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP

Thirteen boy scouts spent a day at Jaya Park picking up strewn litter. Nearby residents who were moved by the effort came out from the comforts of their homes to lend a hand.

Each time the price of cigarettes is increased, most people will pay the extra 20

or 30 sen. Such small price increases won’t discourage people from giving up the habit.

It is time to lay it on the line. Those who smoke should pay dearly for polluting

our air space. Thus, increasing the tax so much that the price of a pack of 20 cigarette

sticks comes to RM20 and banning the sale of packs of 14 sticks might just do the trick.

When the pockets of those who smoke are hurt, they may consider quitting.

Enforcement of non-smoking laws is a joke as enforcement officers are never there

when needed.

Questions 26 – 31 are based on the following passage.

1 2 3 4

Never underestimate bamboo. It feeds humans and provides shelter for millions of people worldwide. Some freak plants have soared to 55 metres, with stems up to 30 centimetres across. Although the bamboo can grow taller than many trees, it is actually a variety of grass. Bamboo is a native to every continent except Europe and Antartica. China, India and Myanmar have 19.8 million hectares of bamboo reserves, which make up 80 per cent of the world’s bamboo forest. The other countries producing bamboo are Bangladesh, Brazil, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. After three years, bamboo stems or culms are very strong. They are strong enough to build homes, pavilions and bridges. A bamboo bridge across the Mekong River near Kompong Cham, Cambodia is strong enough for pedestrian and motorbike traffic. Using new techniques for joining bamboo culms, extraordinary buildings are constructed. An engineer from Hunan University China, has built a 10-metre bridge with the beams made from bamboo composite. The bridge can even support a 16-tonne truck. A renowned architect Simon Velez claims that he can build “anything in bamboo faster and just as cheaply as if it was built with steel”. Technically, bamboo is more stable than oak or cherry wood. Woods expand and contract in the heat and humidity but bamboo barely moves. Since earliest times, humans have found the extraordinary properties of bamboo irresistible. Even today bamboo is used for various reasons. The young shoots can be cooked and eaten. In Taiwan, 2.3 million people consume 80,000 tonnes of edible shoots annually. The leaves are also good for animal fodder. Apart from that, a fully grown male panda consumes up to 38 kilogrammes of Fargesia bamboo a day. This makes up 99 percent of its diet. Silica or better known as tabasheer is extracted from the culms and can be used as medicine to cure ailments including cough, asthma and poisoning. In China, the roots of black bamboo are used to treat kidney problems. As bamboo is versatile by nature, the fibres can be turned into paper. Bamboo brushes were used for the earliest writing. Fishermen have always used bamboo for spears, rods, nets and rafts. Bamboo floors, screens and furniture grace millions of homes worldwide.

Flexibility is another prized characteristic of bamboo. In Limon,

Costa Rica, only bamboo houses remained standing after a violent earthquake in 1992. Bamboo buildings flex like a big basket so they stay up, whereas more rigid steel and concrete structures collapse. So in many Asian countries, even if buildings are not made from bamboo, it is used as scaffolding to support construction. Researches on bamboo are conducted and scientists have come up with new discoveries. Mitsubishi Motors is extracting resin from bamboo to replace plastics for car interiors. In Kenya, bioscientists are investigating how bamboo plants can remove harmful contaminants from soil so that it can be safely reused for crops. Bamboo has long been said to be one of the solutions to many environmental problems. Its rapid growth means it can absorb large quantities of carbon dioxide. It is sustainable, fixes soil to prevent erosion, can be used as natural fertilizer, and provides habitats for many animals.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date: 4

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm’d; And every fair from fair sometimes declines, By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimm’d; 8

But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st; Nor shall Death brag thou wand’rest in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st. 12

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. 14

Finally, an ancient memory stirred in the old man, Mokgobja. When he was very young and the customs of the ancestors still ruled the land, he had been witness to a rain-making ceremony. And he came alive a little struggling to recall the details which had been buried by years and years of prayer in a Christian church. As soon as the mists cleared a little, he began consulting in whispers with his youngest son, Ramadi. There was, he said, a certain rain god who accepted only the sacrifice of the bodies of children.
