Literacy/TechnologyTrends of Today Critical thinking and analytical skills have waned with the greater presence of technology (Science Daily, 2009)

“Our culture values the immediacy of communication over the value of expression.” (canada.com, 2008)

Reading from a screen results in quicker fatigue and stunted comprehension, according to some studies (Gahala & Holum, 2001)

Page 10: Trends presentation.lynntorleya miller

Literacy/TechnologyTrends of Today Just 6% of college professors in a 1,098-professor survey believe incoming freshman are “very well prepared” or “literate” enough for college (Bauerlein, 2008 p. 63) (canada.com, 2008) 20% of college freshman end up in remedial reading courses and

23% end up in remedial writing courses Fifty-five percent of those who read below a basic reading level are unemployed (Neary, 2007)

Page 11: Trends presentation.lynntorleya miller

Literacy/TechnologyTrends of Today Kids as young as five years old get cell phones (Hart, Jackson, Plester, & Wood, 2009) and two-thirds of children in the USA have them (Stewart, 2008)

Youths aged six months to six years spend three times as much with onscreen media (nearly two hours per day) than they do reading or being read to (39 minutes per day) (Bauerlein, 2008)

Libraries have reported circulation from books falling 25 percent with those of audiovisuals doubling over a ten-year period (Bauerlein, 2008 p. 97)

Basic literacy is important for all learning. Knowing how to successfully extract and produce information via text will always be key, no matter the technology

The components of basic literacy lend themselves to exploration and practice through technology
