Treatment for preliminary taskWaka, Zali & Jacob

The purpose of this preliminary task is to create a music video that shows the theme of a ‘journey’. For this we are permitted to use copyrighted music, which leads into the song that we selected, which is ‘The Bay’ by Metronomy.

The song itself is upbeat with a funk inspired vibe. Since the song is like this, it obviously affects the vibe and feel of our music video, which will include Andrew Goodwin’s thoughts and theories. The idea of ‘Thought beats’ which is when the structure, speed and beat of the song are represented visually in the video, is something we all agree will work with the beat of the song, and help to create a slick, fast-paced and distinct video, which will coincide with the overall style we are trying to achieve.

When talking about the specific style, there are certain directors that inspire ideas for our video, e.g. Wes Anderson. His style is immediately recognisable, and we want to try to replicate the sort of symmetry he uses in his films, such as straight shots of buildings, tracking shots etc.

As well as this we want to show the journey of travelling from a fast-paced city environment, to a peaceful beach town. To achieve this, establishing shots and wide shots focusing on imagery are essential. We also aim to have a contrast in colour to help distinguish these two place, e.g. darker bolder colours in town to replicate the busy and loud atmosphere, and then more relaxed softer colours when on Waiheke. The lighting will also

help to contrast this, as in town we are able to find more artificial light, than out on the island and beach, which will all be natural lighting. We will not be bringing in any lighting equipment, so this may have to be reviewed if it is a cloudy, grey day.

Going back to Andrew Goodwin’s theories, our music video will be that of ‘Disjuncture’, as the imagery and video will not be directly reflecting and relating to the lyrics and meaning of the song. •Branding and star Imagery will not be purposely included

in our music video, though brands may feature, e.g. possible shots of restaurants, food, clothing. A lot of this will be determined on what we come across when get to our location and being filming.
