Make sure that your SAM registration is active and have your DUNS Number ready!

Have access to at least 3 recent years of call history for your department

your department name so make sure you verify ahead of the application opening!

Get together with your financial point of contact ahead of time to access at least 3 -5 years of financial history for your department

THOU SHALT REPORT TO NFIRS – this is a requirement upon grant award (and will be required at point of submission in the future) so best to start reporting into NFIRS now

For any request, have a cost estimate, that you are comfortable with, ready for your application

Nobody likes laundry or laundry lists for that matter. Your department AFG grant request should be based on your risk assessments and the greatest need in the department

If you are applying for PPE, make sure you have completed an inventory of your current PPE Know the dates of manufacturer in the case of turnout gear and the NFPA Standard year for SCBA

For regional projects, make sure that all participating departments/agencies had a chance to review and provide feedback of the application before submission This ensures that everyone is on the same page!

Plan on completing your application and narrative elements at least a week before deadline – this will give you ample time to have your final application reviewed before submission
