There are 4 key problems when it comes to marking digital files:

How do we view all the different file types without lots of software?

Files can be very large – e.g. PowerPoint?

How do we actually mark/annotate the files without changing the work?

How do we track different users’ annotations clearly?

The students use it by default now – they really like the quick and contextual feedback;

The teachers love it as it saves time, and gets the students motivated;

It’s also saving the school money!

‘Red Pen Tool has the potential to be the most useful bit of software I’ve bought over the past two or three years and at a sensible price too’

Paul Langdon – Head of ICT

‘Awesome’

‘Red Pen Tool works a treat. The pupils also like the ability to self assess which is also good news for me.’

Ivan Langton, Budehaven Community School

‘The Red Pen tool has solved all of our issues with marking digital work as now the work and the comments/marks come together on the same screen, displaying these in the context of the work just like in any other subject’s exercise book.’

‘Red Pen Tool provides a platform for Assessment for Learning: a pupil’s comments and the teacher's marking will enable the pupil to see what they have to do to make progress and then keep track of their progression.’

Mark Harrison, Sinfin Community College

When supporting collaborative coursework or project based learning we want to:

See evidence of the whole process from beginning to end;

See evidence of the contributions of all group members and how this influences individual and group learning;

Capture evidence dynamically as it happens;

Provide a level playing field for all learners.

Capturing Project Based LearningThe Challenges

How does it work:

The teacher uses an activity authoring tool to define the content and number of steps within the project;

The students access the activity through a web-based client (on or offline);

Evidence is captured on the fly using in-built tools, including:

text & drawing capture;

photo & video capture;

audio capture; and

mind maps.

The Evidence is dynamically sent back to a ‘storyboard’ portfolio for review.
